BIBLE TEXT: Luke 5:2-4

[2]And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were
washing their nets.

[3]And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

[4]Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: “And Simon answering said unto him, Master we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing” (Luke 5:5). This statement unraveled pains and fruitless effort being suffered by Peter and his team after night of believing God for breakthrough. Many are facing enduring situations like abandonment., depression, defeat, agony and they are planning to quit, but they should know that there is hope for them because there is light at the end of the tunnel always. Luke 5:6.

BE ENCOURAGED
…but David encouraged himself in the Lord -I Samuel 30:6. To be encouraged means having more confidence or hope in something or
someone. As a believer, no matter the storm you are going through, be encouraged because;
* God is standing by you – Hebrews 13:5.
* Weeping will soon end for a glorious morning – Psalms 30:5.
* God’s thought for you is glorious, flawless – Jeremiah 29: 1 1.
* Great future awaits you – Job 8:7.
* The storm will soon be over – Mark 4:37-39.
* God knows all happenings – Isaiah 46:10.
* Other saints of old prevailed over challenges – Acts 16:25-26, 12:6-11.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO
DON’TGIVE UP
To every individual, there is always a time of travailing and a time of prevailing. When you succumb to the devil’s instruction, you travail into destruction but when you yield to divine instruction, you prevail into life of resourcefulness.
Giving up means;
* losing hope in God and divine intervention yielding to carnal understanding – II Samuel 13:2-6.
* surrendering your all to defeat – Numbers 14:30-33.
* very desperate to give in to any solution even if it is ungodly – Gen. 16:1-4.

• Elijah-I Kings 19;4.
• Naomi – Ruth 1:8-11;3:13-16.

ACTIVITY: Discuss reasons why believers are giving up?

SUMMARY: Believers should remain relentless, ruthless in their pursuit and never quit their dreams and aspirations.

CONCLUSION: “For His anger endureth but a moment in His favour is life, weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. Psalms 30:5

INTRODUCTION: Honour (from the Hebrew word ‘tiph’arah’) means ‘esteem,’ ‘value,’ or ‘great respect.’ To honour someone is to bestow value upon him or to highly esteem another. It is very important to note that all authority and honour belong to God alone (1 Timothy 1:17; Revelation 5:13). This lesson points us to reasons for honouring God and ways to honour God.

1..REASONS FOR HONOURING GOD
1. Question: Why is God honoured?
Answer: God deserves all honour (Revelation 4:11).
a. There has never been, nor will there ever be, anyone in any position of power or of influence who can claim such an honour (1 Timothy 6:16).
b. God alone is the Creator and the One that sustains the heavens and the earth (Revelation 14:7).

2: Why do believers honour God?
a. For who He is (Isaiah 45:5-6).
b. He is our Father (Matthew 6:9b).
c. In our recognition that the gift of eternal life and the salvation of our souls come through Jesus Christ and Him alone (John 11:25; Acts 4:12; 1Timothy 2:5);
d. For His goodness and wonderful works (Psalm 107:15);
e. For all His benefits (Psalm 68:19).
All true believers are to honour God (Psalm 134:1), through our acknowledgement and confession that He is the one and only God (Exodus 20:3).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should mention other reasons why they must honour God apart from the ones already stated.

2. WAYS TO HONOUR GOD
1. Question: What are the ways of honouring God?
Answer: There are several ways to honour God. Some of them are stated below.
i. We give honour and obeisance to Him through our adoration and obedience to His will (1 Samuel 2:29-30).
ii. To esteem God, as first in our lives, is to totally commit our lives to Him and devote our possessions to His service and glory (Matthew 22:37-38; Colossians 3:17).
iii. Believers are to honour God with their substances (firstfruits, tithes, offerings, etc.) wholeheartedly (Proverbs 3:9-10).
iv. We must honour God by living holy because He is holy and we are created in His image (1 Peter 1:15-16).

2. Question: Are there rewards for honouring God?
Answer: Yes, there are great rewards for honouring Him.
God will:
i. Honour those who honour Him (1 Samuel 2:30).
ii. Give overflowing blessings to those who honour Him (Proverbs 3:9-10).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: The class should discuss how they can honour God without dishonouring men.

CONCLUSION: God deserves all honour and it must be given to Him.

EVALUATION: The teacher should ask the students to explain what it means to honour God and how we can honour Him.

Many young people are easily carried away by mundane things, which sets them on a path of unnecessary competition.

For example, a child who sees his friend using the latest phone and wants to get it at all costs may decide to find resources through any means even though they might be against the will of God.

Jesus warns believers against the lust of the eyes and advises that we should set our affections on Heavenly things so that we would not be drawn into covetousness.

In today’s Bible reading. Jesus accused the Church in Laodicea of being lukewarm: they were neither hot nor cold. They had been carried away by their material prosperity.

Unfortunately, many Churches today are filled with young people who go to church to show off their material possessions- clothes, accessories, cars, et cetera. All these are vanity!

Beloved, don’t be deceived. Nothing Can give you sure access to satisfaction except Jesus Christ Himself, not even the possessions of the whole world.

Many times we pray and it seems like God cannot even hear our prayers, not to talk of answering them.

We even see other people getting their prayers answered seemingly easily and wonder what our offence is that God has not answered us.

In Genesis 30, the Bible says Rachel had no child for Jacob while Leah had birthed child after child for him, even as she aged.

It must have really seemed as if God was not hearing Rachel’s prayers at all, but in verse 22, the Bible says: “And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.”

One major prayer point that you must pray when it seems like God is not hearing your prayer Is, ‘Remember me, oh Lord’.

The first thing that happens when God remembers a person is that the fellow’s prayer would be answered.

If you have been praying for one miracle or the other and there has been no answer, God will remember you this month, in Jesus’ name.

Psalm 65:2 says: “O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come”.

God hears prayers but the Bible says that if He is to answer, there are certain conditions that must be satisfied.

For example, in Isaiah 55:6, the Bible says you must seek the Lord while He may be found and call on Him while He is near.

Thus you may have been praying for a while, not even sure whether He is near or not because you cannot see Him, but when He chooses to remember, He Himself would draw near to you.

The second thing that happens whenever God remembers someone is that doors begin to open for the fellow.

You may have been knocking on some doors that have stubbornly remained shut, but the One who remembered Rachel is He who has the key of David; when He opens, no man can shut and when He shuts, none can open (Revelation 3:7).

If the enemy has shut a door against you, in the name that is above every other, this very day, it will be opened.

All you need is for God to remember you.

The Lord will remember you today as you pray, in Jesus’ name.

The Almighty God is a sure refuge and fortress to His children. A refuge is somewhere a fellow hides when trouble is looming. For me, this place is the presence of God.

Sometimes, hiding is not cowardice, it could be wisdom, provided you are hiding under the Sure Refuge.

Even gallant warriors learn to hide; it is a military strategy

There are several occasions in the Bible when God told His prophets to hide like in 1 Kings 17:1-3.

When God says you should hide, what it implies is that the battle is no longer yours but His.

I have learnt to hide when God says I should. Even baby Jesus was taken into hiding so that God could deal with Herod.

You have to be careful about the things you post on social media about your life. Not everyone should know the recent updates about you.

Some children have become victims of mishaps because they don’t know where to draw the line between the public and private matters of their lives.

May the Lord give you the wisdom to do your part as He continues to protect you.

OPEN HEAVEN 1 NOVEMBER 2023 MESSAGE

Barrenness can also be described as fruitless efforts.

It could take different forms, some of which could include physical, material, academic or ministerial barrenness.

I pray that the Almighty God will put an end to every form of barrenness in your life today, in Jesus’ name.

Physical barrenness refers to when a married couple is childless.

One of my daughters was told that there was no way she could carry a child because her womb was blocked.

At one of our programmes, God spoke through me that there was someone whom the doctor had said couldn’t have a child, but that the fellow would have twins.

She believed the prophecy and held on to God’s word.

To the glory of God, she became pregnant and went abroad to deliver through a caesarean section.

To the surprise of the surgeons, she didn’t even have a womb. This was about twenty years ago.

Recently, I got a phone call from this daughter of mine, and she said she wanted to bring the twins to me for a visit.

I was surprised when she arrived, because she was carrying a new set of twins.

The first set were now in the University and God, in His mercy, gave her another set of twins.

God did what only He can do. If He could do it for that daughter of mine and you have been asking Him for a child, He will give you twins also, in Jesus’ name.

Material barrenness refers to when a person works tirelessly with nothing to show for it – like Peter, who fished all night and caught nothing (Luke 5:5).

Thankfully, Peter accepted Jesus into his boat, obeyed the Lord’s instruction and got a net breaking catch (Luke 5:1-7).

An example of academic barrenness is when a lecturer works very hard but can not publish papers and as a result, does not get promoted. Such people are referred to as academically barren.

Interestingly, my life had an order. When I was younger, I had a clear-cut vision for my life to be the youngest Vice Chancellor in Africa, and that gave me a direction in my life.

I was also interested in sports and music, so I created routines in my daily schedules to accommodate all these activities.

When I eventually gave my life to Jesus Christ, I included Bible study in my schedule because I needed to grow spiritually as I was growing in other areas too.

You shouldn’t be excellent in spiritual things and mediocre in your academics or hobbies.

There has to be a balance, which comes by putting things in the right order in your life.

Orderliness eliminates confusion, mediocrity, and non-productivity.

I pray that God will give you the wisdom to become orderly in the mighty name of Jesus.

Orderliness is a characteristic of Heaven, as we see in Psalm 136:5-9, In the beginning, God ordered the course of the universe by His word.

This is why we must give God’s word prominence in our lives.

Many Christians trade blames when things don’t go right. They query God for permitting evil circumstances around them.

Some outrightly renounce their faith and backslide in the process, but our Bible text warns: “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

Like I always say to my children, God is not unaware of any circumstance you may be in, whether pleasant or unpleasant, however, He wants you to maintain the right disposition throughout your trials.

Job’s ordeal could have made him curse God, but He chose to praise God instead.

Even when his friends and wife advised him to curse God and die, he chose to trust Him.

Ingratitude is an act of robbery against God. He expects that you will appreciate Him for the numerous blessings He has bestowed on you.

It is dangerous not to be thankful because your joy cannot be full if you are not thankful.

Don’t become ungrateful when faced with a challenge. Rather, praise God in advance for your victory.
