OPEN HEAVEN 14 AUGUST 2023 MEMORIZE: Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 2 John 1:9

OPEN HEAVEN 14 AUGUST 2023 BIBLE READING MATTHEW 7:24-28

24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:

25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.

26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:

OPEN HEAVEN 14 AUGUST 2023 MESSAGE

John 3:1-2 tells us clearly that Jesus was a teacher. It may amaze you that throughout His ministry on earth, nobody ever called Him Evangelist or Prophet or Pastor; they kept calling Him ‘Teacher’.

Everywhere Jesus went, He went teaching, including by the seaside (Mark 2:13). Jesus is a teacher and likes to relate with us as such, this is good news because the teacher is held responsible for the success or failure of a student.

If the teacher can then prove that the student failed because he or she refused to obey instructions, then the teacher is relieved of that responsibility.

You see this clearly when Jesus gave His report at the end of His time on earth in John 17:12. He said: “While l was with them in the world, l kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me l have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.”

Thus if you listen to all Jesus’ instructions and obey Him, He will definitely help you make it to heaven at the end of time.

After Jesus resurrected from the dead, His role advanced from teacher to Teacher of teachers. This is why, in John 20:16, Mary Magdalene called Him ‘Rabboni’ a special title used to honour great teachers.

For those of us who are teachers of the gospel, James 3:1 says that we would receive greater condemnations on the last day if our works are found wanting.

Of course, this is because such people are responsible for the souls of men that the Almighty God allocates to them. The good news however, is that we have a Teacher who will teach us how to pass this great test on the last day.

He is always there to teach you how to succeed in whatever assignment He commits into your hands. That is why l have always told my children not to get so busy with ministry that they lose connection with the Teacher of teachers.

Believe me honestly, without Him, you cannot do ministry right. You cannot be snatching souls from the devil’s kingdom and expect him to be soft on you.

He will deploy many tactics to bring you down, but if you remain connected to the Teacher of teachers, you will win in the end. Stay connected to the Teacher of teachers.

OPEN HEAVEN 14 AUGUST 2023 PRAYER POINT

Teacher of teachers, please teach me what to do to make it to heaven at the end.

OPEN HEAVEN 14 AUGUST 2023 HYMN

HYMN 9: IMMORTAL, INVISIBLE GOD ONLY WISE

1 Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious,
Thy great name we praise.

2 Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
Nor wanting, nor wasting,
Thou rulest in might;
Thy justice like mountains high soaring above
Thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

3 To all life Thou givest, to both great and small;
In all life Thou livest, the true life of all;
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
And wither and perish,
but nought changeth Thee.

4 Great Father of Glory, pure Father of light,
Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight;
All laud (praise) we would render, O help us to see
‘Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Ephesians 4:8-16
[8]Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.”

[9](Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?
[10]He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)
[11]And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,
[12]for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
[13]till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;
[14]that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,

[15]but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—

[16]from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. The New Man.
MEMORY VERSE: “For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:” Ephesians 4:12 (NKJV).
INTRODUCTION: ‘Katartismos’ from the word ‘Katartizo’ is a concept in Greek that means to mend, repair, make whole, or perfect. It also means to make something or someone completely adequate or sufficient for a purpose or task. The basic idea is that of putting a thing into the condition in which it ought to be. This concept is however used in relation to the perfecting and equipping of saints for the God-given assignments committed to them. God wants His people to become perfect in all ramifications (Gen.17:1). He desires nothing less than perfection (Matt.5:48). Perfection is possible for all saints in Christ.
1. THE SAINTS DESCRIBED
2. STEPS TO PERFECTION
1. THE SAINTS DESCRIBED
The word “Saint” comes from the Greek word hagios, which means “consecrated to God, holy, sacred, pious.” It is almost always used in the plural, “Saints.” (Acts 9:13,32; 26:10; Phil 4:21). These are the group of people set apart for the Lord and His kingdom. Scripturally speaking, the “saints” are the body of Christ, Christians, the Church. Christians are considered as saints (1Cor.1:2). They are called to be saints, to increasingly allow their daily life to closely match their position in Christ. This is the biblical description and calling of the saints. The saints are both on earth and in heaven (Ps.16:3; Matt.27:52; Zech.14:5); everyone who has received Jesus Christ by faith is a saint (Ps.89:7; Acts 9:32, 41; Acts 26:10; Rom.1:7); saints are called to revere, worship, and pray to God alone (Ps.149:1-9). Every believer becomes a saint at salvation through the cleansing of sin by the blood of Jesus. At this point the righteousness of Christ is imputed on the believer: he is no longer a sinner but a saint in Christ (Eph.2:6-8). However, as long as the believer is in this world, temptations and trials are inevitable. He must therefore work out his salvation with fear and trembling (Phil.2:5). There are three references referring to godly character of saints: They must live worthy (Rom.16:1-2), they are to build up the body of Christ (Eph.4:12), they are to be free from immorality or any impurity or greed (Eph.5:3).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Are you a saint?
2. STEPS TO PERFECTION
There are vital steps that help in building and perfecting the saints. These include:
1. Study of God’s word (Acts 20:32): It is the food for the saints (1Pet.5:2; Heb. 5:12-13; 1Pet.2:2). It cleanses them always (Jn. 15:3; Eph. 5:26), it continually trains them for perfection (2Tim.3:16-17), God uses it primarily to equip His saints (Ps.119:9-11; Ps.1:2-3, Josh.1:8).
2. Focus on Jesus: The saints continually get perfected as much as they look to Jesus their master (Heb.12:1-2).

3. Aim for the Prize of the high calling: They also get perfected by setting their gaze on the prize of the high calling in Christ Jesus (Phil. 3:14) shedding off the weights and sins that easily beset them (Heb.12:1) and bringing their physical body into subjection (1Cor.9:26-27).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should mention what they are doing to ensure they become saints.
CONCLUSION: God wants nothing but perfection from His Saints (Gen.6:9b; 2 Chr.19:9). If you aim at it, you will get it!
QUESTIONS:
Describe who a saint is?
Identify the steps to perfection.
FURTHER READING: MON: Ps.119:105; TUE: John 15:5; WED: Deut.33:2-3; THUR: 1Sam.2:9; FRI: Ps.16:3; SAT: Hos.11:12; SUN: Rom.12:13.
ASSIGNMENT: List five things you will do this week to build up your spiritual life. (2×5=10 marks).

MEMORY VERSE: “Wherefore, we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.” Hebrews 12:28

BIBLE PASSAGE: 2 Corinthians 8:6-9
[6]Insomuch that we desired Titus, that as he had begun, so he would also finish in you the same grace also.
[7]Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this grace also.
[8]I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love.
[9]For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
LESSON INTRODUCTION: In addition to the description of ‘Grace’ given in the previous lesson, Grace can also be referred to as the divine influence in a human heart that reflects on the outside. It produces favour, beauty, goodwill, loveliness and ability. It increase as one grows in the knowledge of God’s word (2 Pet.3:18). We shall therefore consider the various dimensions of grace mentioned in the Bible as well as some actions that can be taken with or against grace.

1. DIMENSIONS OF GRACE

2. WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH/AGAINST GRACE
DIMENSIONS OF GRACE
The Bible talks about grace in various dimensions. For instance, we have common grace (Ps.145:9; Matt.5:45), saving grace (Eph.2:4-9; Tit.2:11), abundant grace (2 Cor.4:15), sanctifying grace (Tit.2:12; 1Jn.2:15-16), sustaining grace (Rom.6:14; Jude: 1:24-25), supernatural/enabling grace (Phil.4:13; Lk.1:37), service (gifting) grace (Rom.12:6; Eph.4:7), sufficient grace (2 Cor.9:8; 1 Pet.5:10), victorious grace (1 Sam.17:36-37), sacrificial giving grace (Gen.22:9-10; 2Cor.12:15), great grace (Acts 4:33), eternal grace (1Cor.9:27), etc.
The key to access and operate at any of these levels or dimensions of grace lies in the degree of one’s connection with Christ from whom all grace originates and the desire to grow in Him (Jn.15:5; Phil.4:13; 2 Pet.3:18).
WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH/AGAINST GRACE
There are lots of benefits that a believer can derive from grace apart from salvation. Grace can impart great blessings (Ps.84:11). It also imparts faith (Acts 18:27). In addition, it makes one God’s elect (Rom.11:5-6), gives boldness (1 Cor.15:10), calls believers to the ministry (Gal.1:15), helps render acceptable service (Heb.12:28), gives seasoning to speech (Col.4:6), gives strength (2 Tim.2:1), helps in time of need (Heb.4:16) and brings hope (2 Thess.2:16), among others.
However, it is possible to do the following against grace:
1. Receive grace in vain (2 Cor.6:1).
2. Frustrate grace in one’s life (Gal.2:21).
3. Fall from grace (Gal.1:6-8; 5:4).
4. Fail of the grace of God (Heb.12:15).
5. Turn grace into lasciviousness (Jude 4).
6. Sin in spite of grace (Rom.6:1).
7. Reject grace through pride (Jam.4:6).
CONCLUSION: Every believer must aspire to grow in grace (2 Pet.3:18). It is a dangerous thing to abuse grace despite its benefits.
QUESTIONS:
1. State the dimensions of Grace known to you.
2. What can you do with/against grace?
