RCCG SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS MANUAL LESSON NINE 28TH OCTOBER 2018 – INTENTIONAL DISCIPLE-MAKING

OPENING PRAYER: Father as I grow in you, help me to consciously make disciples for your kingdom.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

BIBLE PASSAGE : 2 TIMOTHY 3:10-15.

MEMORY VERSE :
“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also”. 2 Timothy 2:2.

LESSON INTRODUCTION Discipleship process requires a teacher-student relationship.

Hence, there is no discipleship where the convert is not taken through a definite process of intentional learning. The goal of discipleship is to produce an individual who has come to the realization of living on daily basis with Christ and experiencing consistent growth through the transforming work of the Holy Spirit. TEACHER’S DIARY LESSON AIM :

To study the reasons and the process involved in intentional discipleship.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES : Through the lesson, students should be able to:

(i) Understand the reasons for intentional discipleship.

(ii) Discover how to disciple others.

To achieve the above-stated objectives, teachers should:

(i) Allow students to review the previous week’s lesson, encourage the students to participate and make useful contributions to the discussion, recite memory verse, take the opening prayer, do class activities and assignment.

(ii) Allow Assistant teacher to conduct the class, grade the student’s performance and mark the attendance and close the class session with the closing prayer.

(iii) Teach the lesson outlines, administer the two (2) class activities, summarize, conclude, evaluate the lesson and give assignment.

TEXT REVIEW : 2TIMOTHY 3:10-15 –

“MASTER AND HIS STUDENT”.

(i) The following phrases point to the fact that a master-student relationship existed between Apostle Paul and Timothy:
“thou hast fully known my doctrine” (verse 10).
“knowing of whom thou hast learned them” (verse 15) and
“from whom hast thou learned them” (verse 15).

(ii) Apostle Paul must have spent quality time with Timothy before Timothy could master the nine (9) “faith courses” in three (3) different countries of Antioch, lconium and at Lystra. Verses 10-11

(iii) These courses were: doctrines, manner of life, purpose, faith, long-suffering, charity, patience, persecutions and afflictions. Verses 10-11.

(iv) These scripture-based subjects, Apostle Paul declared, were able to make the learners, Timothy,wise and produce good workieffect. Verses 14-16.

(v) The Apostle delivered the final key note instruction to Timothy (in verse 14) when he said,
“continue thou in the things which thou has learned and has been assured of …”
He stated that doing this, Timothy would become perfect and thoroughly furnished unto ALL good work. Verse 17.

TEACHING METHOD : Teacher should use lecture teaching method.

TIME MANAGEMENT : Teacher should apply the time allocated for two (2) lesson outlines.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: REASONS FOR INTENTIONAL DISCIPLESHIP

(i) Intentional discipleship is a conscious, deliberate and purposeful effort of the teacher to reproduce himself/herself in the student

(ii) The Lord Jesus commended it. Matt. 28:18-20.

(iii) Intentional discipleship will ensure the continuity of the gospel. Acts 2:42.

(iv) It will enable the disciple to do a greater work in the ministry. John 14:12.

(v) It will eradicate the sacred/secular dichotomy in which the church-life and work-life of the disciples are different (being holy only in the church and becoming the opposite outside the church) 2Cor. 5:20.

(vi) It will help to raise new generations of kingdom believers and world-changers. 2 Tim. 1:5.

LESSON OUTLINE 2 : HOW TO DISCIPLE OTHERS

(i) The Lord Jesus recruited, reshaped and renewed his disciples to change the world through the gospel. The Lord also did the following:

(ii) Living an exemplary life. 1 Cor. 11:1; Titus 2:7; 1Tim. 4:12.

(iii) Spiritual parenting. 1 Tim. 1:2; 6:20; Gal. 4:19.

(iv) Giving of instruction. Matt. 28:20; 1 Tim. 1:1-19.

(v) Letting your disciples observe what you do. Luke 11:1 and committing them to do what you would have done. 2 Tim. 2:2.

(vi) Giving allowance for mistakes and correction. Matt. 16:22- 24; 2Tim. 4:2.

(vii) Giving room for progress report/feedback. Luke 10:17.

(viii) Making recommendation for subsequent endeavours. Matt. 17:19-21 and being able to recommend such individual to others. Romans 16:1-2; Phil. 4:3.

CONCLUSION :
You are not successful until your successor has succeeded. Intentional discipleship does not just prepare the disciples for heaven but makes them relevant on earth. Therefore, make conscious effort to disciple others for Christ.

24 Shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captive delivered?

25 But thus saith the Lord, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

26 And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

The reason why some children of God miss their day of visitation is that they don’t take prophetic utterances from God seriously, whether written or spoken.

For this reason, l encourage you to see the words of our devotional today as prophetic, coming to you from your Maker who can never lie.

By the word of the Lord, I proclaim to you that this is the day of your freedom. It shall be unto you as it is written in Psalm 91:3, which says

“Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler; and from the noisome pestilences.”

In today’s Bible reading, the Lord as the Almighty specifically declares His ability to set the captives free, including lawful captives. Beloved, the meaning of this scripture is that those who willingly got themselves into bondage and are tired of staying there are candidates for God’s deliverance.

Some people think that once someone willingly enters into witchcraft, the occult, secret societies, and the like, he or she can never be free again, but going by what the Lord declares in Isaiah 49:24, this is not true.

The last verse of today’s Bible reading contains the key to experiencing the divine intervention that the Lord declares in the preceding verses, and this is where there could be a challenge. It reads in part:

“…and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am the Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.”

What constitutes the challenge in this verse? The promise to deliver is only for those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Redeemer. Open Heaven 26 October 2018

Open Heaven 27 October 2018

l once ministered deliverance to a traditional title holder in Nigeria, and it got to the point where he needed to accept Jesus as His Saviour. Amazingly, he refused.

All he wanted was God’s benefit of deliverance without submitting to His Lordship. Unfortunately, he died while still in the valley of indecision about accepting the Lord. So, the choice is yours today. Isaiah 1:19 says:

 “lf ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land”

If you willingly submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ over Your life, He will not only set you free, He will also ensure that your freedom is permanent by destroying all your oppressors, as He did to the Egyptians in the Red Sea (Exodus 14:26-28). The Lord of Hosts be praised! Amen.

The title of today’s devotional is a question which precipitated the parable of the Good Samaritan. This question is even more relevant today because the character of good neighborliness is fast becoming a scarce commodity. Open Heaven 25 October 2018

It is even more astonishing to find out that the brotherly love that helped the Church to grow in the early days of the Christian faith is dwindling among 21st century believers, but this should not be so.

In Galatians 6:10, the Holy Spirit answered the question of who our neighbor is when he admonished us thus:

‘’As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.’’

To prevent any ambiguity, the Holy Spirit also gives us practical examples of what He meant in the above scripture in James 2:15-16, saying:

‘’If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; not withstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?’’

Through this scripture, the holy spirit is saying that there is no good neighborliness in theoretical spirituality that is not accompanied by action.

In today’s Bible text, our Lord used the actions of the Samaritan to vividly illustrate good neighborliness, contrasting his charitable deeds against the selfish attitudes of the priest and the Levite. It is unfortunate that the actions of the letter two reflect what is happening among Christian brethren today.

To the pastor, the sick child of the neighbor may die, as long as he is not late to preach somewhere. A chorister would not want to be late for choir practice, even though the fellow sister is critically ill somewhere.

Beloved, the Holy Spirit demands that we add virtue to our faith (2nd Peter 1:5). When we add the virtue of good deeds to our faith, the task of our evangelizing the word will become very easily to accomplish.

The story was told of the General Overseer of a reputable church in Lagos, Nigeria, whose decision to accept Christ was motivated by the kindness of a Christian couple during the Nigeria civil war.

He wondered what kind of people would give a bowl full of rice to him, a hungry fugitive who was about to die, at a time when food was terribly scarce. He found out that they where Christians, and there and then he decided to join them in serving Jesus. Beloved, let your faith come alive today with good works.

One of the fallacies of life is the notion that when you have money, you have everything. How untrue this is! My experiences in ministry have taught me that there is so much that money cannot do. For example, money cannot make a barren woman conceive. If you doubt this, ask the wealthy Shunammite woman (2nd Kings 4:8-17).

It is amazing that when Elisha asked this woman what she desired, she momentarily forgot or pretended to forget that there was something she lacked which her money could not buy, which was a child (2nd Kings 4:13 ). Irrespective of this, in 2nd Kings 4:16, Elisha declared to her:

‘’… About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.’’

Why did she doubt Elisha’s declaration? It was because she considered it too good to be true! She also probably felt that whatever money could not do, nothing else could do it.

I have good news for a user of this devotional: that need that money has failed to meet in your life, which you have used good money to travel across several hospitals in the world to resolve to no avail, you will receive it this season in Jesus’ Name.

I was once invited to preach in an area where the ‘’who is who ‘’ in Nigeria reside. When I got to the particular house I was invited to and I saw money in action, I decided to change my sermon to something like ‘’ it is good to bless the Lord’’, because I could not imagine that family having a single need; but I was wrong.

Before long, I realized that there was problem that money could not solve in that family, so I introduced them to the God with whom there is no impossibility. Open Heaven 24 October 2018

At the end of the day, God resolved the problem that money could not solve for them. God will solve the problem defied the power of money in your life today in Jesus’ Name. Today’s Bible reading narrates the interesting story of a man who was very successful in his farming business.

Although most rich man are never satisfied with the amount of wealth they possess, this particular one was so rich that he planned to retire from creating more wealth. Unfortunately, he died the same night he conceive his plan.

His money could not prevent death from snatching him away from enjoying his hard-earned wealth. Shame to money that cannot save its owner from death! If money cannot save from physical death, how would it save a person from eternal death?

Jesus said the foolishness of this rich man is applicable to those who lay up earthly treasures for themselves but are not rich towards God (Luke 12:21). Are you one of such people?

1.Thank You, Father, for Your patience and mercy, that endureth forever over my life and family; and for always making all things beautiful at Your own time.
