BIBLE PASSAGE: Acts 5:1-16

Acts:5.1
But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession.

Acts:5.2
And he kept back [part] of the proceeds, his wife also being aware [of it,] and brought a certain part and laid [it] at the apostles’ feet.

Acts:5.3
But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back [part] of the price of the land for yourself?

Acts:5.4
“While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

Acts:5.5
Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things.

Acts:5.6
And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried [him] out, and buried [him.]

Acts:5.7
Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.

Acts:5.8
And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?” She said, “Yes, for so much.”

Acts:5.9
Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband [are] at the door, and they will carry you out.”

Acts:5.10
Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying [her] out, buried [her] by her husband.

Acts:5.11
So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things.

Acts:5.12
And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon’s Porch.

Acts:5.13
Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly.

Acts:5.14
And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,

Acts:5.15
so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid [them] on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them.

Acts:5.16
Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.

INTRODUCTION:
A person who pretends to be something that he really is not, is a hypocrite. It is not just making a mistake but a deliberate plan to pretend, deceive or cheat. He is dirty inside but clean outside (Joshua 7:1, 8-12; Matthew 23:27).

A person in a drama representing someone else explains this. He could imitate the speech, mannerisms and conduct of the character portrayed; but in real life he is a different person.

LESSON OUTLINES
1. Forms and reasons for hypocrisy
2. Consequences of hypocrisy

FORMS AND REASONS FOR HYPOCRISY

Hypocrisy can take two forms: that of professing belief in something and then acting in a manner contrary to that belief (Isaiah 29:13).

The other is that of looking down on others when we ourselves are flawed (Matthew 7:3-5; Romans 2:1). Jesus described hypocrites as wolfs in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15), white-washed tombs (Matthew 23:27), snakes and broods of vipers (Matthew 23:33) and graves (Luke 11:44).

There are several reasons people engage in hypocrisy. These include; pride of life (1John 2:15-16), undeserved desire for the honour of men and a feeling of insecurity (2Corinthians 10:12).

They want to be respected in the church as being holy but in secret, committing sins (1Samuel 15:13,20,25-30). Ananias and his wife wanted the praise given to Barnabas when they were not as faithful (Acts 4:34-37; 5:1-10).

Some people pretend to be who/what they are not in order to cheat (Genesis 27:20-22). People who declare false records and inaccurate tithing fall under this category (Proverbs 11:1). Self-indulgence may be another reason for hypocrisy (Romans 16:18).

CONSEQUENCES OF HYPOCRISY

God knows all things including the secret deceit of the heart (Psalm 44:21; Jeremiah 17:9-10; 1Samuel 16:7) and all the ways of man (Job 31:4; Psalm 1:16). No one can hide from Him or deceive Him.

He will repay every man according to his works (Revelations 22:11-12). The consequences of hypocrisy may include:

1. Bad leadership (1Samuel 15:13,20,25-30).

2. Shame and disgrace (Jeremiah 13:25-26).

3. Punishment (Proverbs 11:21).

4. Curses (Isaiah 29:15-16; Job 15:34-35).

5. Untimely or spiritual death (Job 27:8; 36:13-14; 1John 5:12).

CONCLUSION
The same way fornication is a sin against God, so also is hypocrisy (Galatians 5:19-21). The only solution is repentance (Isaiah 55:7).

QUESTIONS
1. Mention 4 reasons for hypocrisy.
2. What are the consequences of hypocrisy?
3. How can we stop hypocrisy in the Church?

PRAYER POINT: Father, set me on fire for you and keep me burning.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Act 2:1-4
1. And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Hebrews 1:7b
Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.

INTRODUCTION: Fire is that which burns. The Pentecostal fire otherwise known as Holy Ghost Fire; is a release of a measure of God’s power on His Children. The churches survived in the face of stiff opposition because of this deposit of God’s power upon their lives

MEMORY VERSE: I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
Matthew 3:11

TEXT REVIEW: Acts 2:1-4, Hebrews 1:7b
i. You need a secret place where you wait on Him.
ii. The 3 components must be ready for this fire.
iii. God comes down when we wait in His presence when we stay on
iv. Always wait in His presence when we stay on.

LESSON OUTLINE:
Characteristics of Holy Ghost Fire.
1. The Fire is Focused. The only duty of fire is to burn. Consequently, anyone who is to be the Lord’s disciple must be focused.
2. The Fire has integrity. Every child of God, being fire, must be somebody of integrity. Someone whose yes is yes and whose nay is nay.
3. The Fire is solidly reliable. You can rely on the fire to burn in the morning, afternoon, evening, night time, rainy season, dry season or any time. Solidly reliable is this fire, unlike some children of God that are not reliable.
4.The Fire is pure. The fire is pure and simple. You will never find any gimmick with fire.
5. Your Fire is truly hot. When you are on Holy Ghost Fire, you will never be cold nor lukewarm.
6. The Fire is predictable. Fire is not like water. Water may turn up as ice today and as steam tomorrow and the next day as iced water, but fire is fire all the time. It is predictable. God expects all His children to be predictable.
7. The Fire is uncompromising. It is an aggressive, confrontational and uncompromising fire. Whenever fire comes in contact with something, it wants to consume it, (Hebrews 12:29). It wants to change those things to itself. When it comes to holiness, we must not compromise, because nobody can see God without holiness, (Hebrews 12:14).

The Importance of the Fire.
We need the Holy Ghost fire for:
1. Power to witness, and to move mountains. Acts 1:8
2. To be able to keep the commandments of God. John 14:20-21
3. Power to overcome the vices of the devil.
4. And for signs and wonders manifestation. Hebrews 2:4
5. To secure liberty/freedom for the captives. Isaiah 61:1
6. To bring light to darkness.
7. For all round revival.

Rekindling the Fire
Before asking God to rekindle the fire of the Holy Ghost, we must find out what extinguishes the fire, in the first instance, so as to avoid the pitfall of the past:
1. Carelessness. Matt. 26:41,1Kings 1:11-18
2. Comfort. 2 Samuel 11:1-25
3. Overconfidence. 1 Cor 10:12, Mk 14:29-31
4. Outright sin. Isaiah 59:1-2, 1 John 3:8
5. Oil leakage. Matthew 25:8-12, Lk 6:10-12
6. Indulging the flesh. Rom 8:8

SUMMARY: Your fire should at no time go off.

CONCLUSION: It is obvious that the most dangerous thing that can happen to a child of God is to once have the fire burning in him/her and not to have it any more. So not allow the fire to go out. Always keep the fire burning by supplying fuel as at when due. 1 Thess. 5:17

TEXT REVIEW : ACTS 5:1-16 –
“THE ACTORS”.

(i) Lying and deception which characterize hypocrisy are rooted in Satan and not God. Acts 5:3.

(ii) The devil wants people to receive praises and glory which they do not deserve. He made them to “act” what they are not. Acts 5:2.

(iii) Lying unto the Holy Spirit is lying to God and to the Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 5:4, 9.

(iv)The consequence of “unity to sin”, “agreement to commit fraud” and “false pretense” is death. Acts 5:5,10.

(v) Ananias and Sapphira must have died because of their love for money and materialism. Acts 5:1-2; 1Tim. 6:10.

(vi)You cannot love money (root of evil) and claim you love God. Such claim is hypocritical and unacceptable.

(vii) Many people in the church who are not born again but who pretend to be one are actors.

(viii) Taking Holy the Communion under the pretense of being holy is acting like Ananias and Sapphira.

(ix) Tithes and vow defaulters are not better than actors.

Open Heaven 5 November 2018 Memorize: But now they desire a better country that is a heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God for He hath prepared for them a city. Hebrews 11:16

Open Heaven 5 November 2018 Read: Hebrews 11:15-16

15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

Bible in one year: Jeremiah 43-45, Luke 16:19-17: 10 – Hymnal: sing Hymn 2

When I came into full-time ministry as the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), l was confronted with the challenge of accommodation, as I had to move out of the mansion provided for me by the university I resigned from. Read – Open Heaven 4 November 2018

So l prayed to God for a ‘boys’ quarters’ of three rooms that could accommodate me and my family. However, the Almighty God who called me told me not to even ask for a whole house, because He would build me a city.

Since l knew His voice-He is my Daddy and l Am His son-l believed what He said. Today, the city He spoke about, where nothing will be lacking, is built on the Lagos-lbadan Expressway, Nigeria.

Beloved, how big is your dream? Is God in that dream? No matter how big that dream may be, if God is in it, it will surely come to pass.

Dreams are a very important aspect of human life, because they influence the height a person will reach in life. It is an unfortunate thing for someone to dream small.

It is like going to the river to fetch water with a table spoon. Only those who go to the river with big buckets and tanks will maximise the opportunity the trip to the river provides. Read – Open Heaven 3 November 2018

In the same vein, the realm of eternal life in heaven with God should definitely influence your actions as a Christian. Today’s Bible text speaks about the heroes of faith and their dream of better citizenship in heaven, for which they considered themselves strangers and pilgrims on earth.

Open Heaven 5 November 2018

They sought a country that was far better than any in this world. When you see a person who professes to be a Christian greedily amassing wealth at the expense of the expansion of God’s kingdom, don’t be surprised: such a fellow’s actions only indicate how earthly minded he or she is. In Matthew 6: 1 9-2 1, the Lord Jesus Christ said;

“Lay not up yourselves treasure upon earth where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for themselves treasure in heaven, where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where your treasure is there will your heart he also.”

Unless you are deceiving yourself, your dream of heaven should be big enough to swallow any earthly ambition you have.

Our Lord promised us that He was going to heaven in order to prepare a place for us, after which He would come back to take us to Himself in eternal bliss. Let this dream drive you into godliness with contentment which is great gain indeed (1 Timothy 6:6).

WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS

Verse 1:
What a Friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

Verse 2:
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Verse 3:
Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge,
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer;
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.

OPEN HEAVEN 4 NOVEMBER 2018 – BLESSINGS ASSOCIATED WITH BANQUETING

Open Heaven 4 November 2018 Memorize: A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken. Proverbs 15:13

Open Heaven 4 November 2018 Bible Reading Esther 7:1-7

7 So the king and Haman came to banquet with Esther the queen.

2 And the king said again unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom.

3 Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request:

4 For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not countervail the king’s damage.

5 Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?

6 And Esther said, The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.

7 And the king arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden: and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.

The topic of today devotional may be surprising to you. Indeed, some Christian zealots discredit banqueting, and they tend to glory in not associating themselves with parties. Read – Open Heaven 3 November 2018

Trying to justify themselves, you will hear some say, “I am not a party person.” Yes, there is no crime in not being a party person; am not a party person either.

However, there are benefits associated with banqueting found in God’s word, and because of these blessings, I attend parties once a while and get blessed by doing so, because it is in the word of God.

I thank God for my wife; even when she is fasting, you will always see her cooking. The word of God has inspired her to continually host banquets, culminating in the birth of an annual outreach programmed christened ‘Feast of Esther’! The Lord be praised!

According to today’s memory verse, one of the blessings of banqueting, is a cheerful spirit. The children of this world know this secret and they take advantage of the blessing of joy brought on by getting together.

Open Heaven 4 November 2018

Although they mostly misuse the opportune of merriment, they still get the associated blessing of a cheerful spirit because it is the word of God.

In today’s Bible reading, Queen Esther took advantage of the lesson associate with banqueting to fight a war that could otherwise have been lost If fought on the battlefield.

Using her privilege as queen, she perfectly hosted the kin to a sumptuous inner party and got his attention for the salvation of her people from annihilation.

The effect of good meals is obvious in the Bible. Good meals have either made or marred people’s destinies. Delicious pottage destroyed the destiny of Esau, while a good meal placed irreversible blessings on Jacob (Genesis 25:29-34, Genesis 27).

Also, a good meal prescribed by God Himself delivered the Jews from Bondage in Egypt (Exodus 12:5-10). Beloved, when occasion warrants you to host a banquet, go ahead and do it.

You can use Nehemiah 8:10 as a template of what festivities for children of God should look like. This scripture verse says:

…Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Are you planning to host a banquet and the devil is putting doubts in your heart? Go ahead with that joyful gathering, and there shall be no problem; rather you will come back with unimaginable testimonies of victories over those who don’t want you to celebrate in Jesus’ name.

Open Heaven 4 November 2018 Payer Point: Father please give me a reason to host a celebration this season in Jesus name.

A NEW THING

(Tune: There shall be showers of Blessing)

We will soon shout Halleluiah
Because God will do new things
Sinners will be forgiven
Prodigals will come home soon.

Chorus:
Shout Hallelujah
Because God will do new things
Rivers in desert now flowing
Hallelujah to our king.

We will soon shout Hallelujah
Because God will do new things
Sickness and sorrow will be gone
Bondage will be forgotten.

We will soon shout Hallelujah
Because God will do new things
The barren will be faithful soon
Failure will be forgotten.

We will soon shout Hallelujah
Because God will do new things
Poverty will be forgotten
Stagnancy will soon be gone.

We will soon shout Hallelujah
Because God will do new things
To all miracles are given
There shall be celebrations

We will soon shout Hallelujah
Because God will do new things
Many will have testimonies
Of prayer answered fully.

We will soon shout Hallelujah
Because God will do new things
One of us will chase a thousand
Two will conquer ten thousand

We will soon shout Hallelujah
Because God will do new things
Songs of praises we will sing
Hallelujah to our King
