Open Heaven 5 September 2018 Bible Reading: Genesis 27:1-10 (KJV)

1 And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.

2 And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death:

3 Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;

4 And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.

5 And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.

6 And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying,

7 Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the Lord before my death.

8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.

9 Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth:

10 And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death.

The story of Esau and Jacob in today’s Bible reading contains a salient lesson we are often oblivious to. Not only was Esau irrational in his disposition to life in his younger days, he was also not prudent enough.

I believe he eventually learnt his lesson, even though he learnt it the hard way. It takes prudence to become so rich that you have 400 bodyguards. The level of wealth Esau displayed at his reconciliatory meeting with Jacob also point to a life of prudence (Genesis 32:6; Genesis 33:8-9). Click To Read – Open Heaven 4 September 2018

However, the salient lesson I want you to be mindful of today is that Esau had no reservoir of meat. If Esau had been preserving his meat for ready-to-cook use, he would not have needed to go so far before preparing his father’s favourite meal.

While he was living from hand to mouth, his brother had enough in his flock to spare in case of emergencies, such as the need which arose on that fateful day. Esau was not saving for the rainy day; he usually went to the field to fetch venison as the need arose.

Open Heaven 5 September 2018

Unfortunately, his lifestyle of not saving enough made him susceptible to the tricks of his brother and mother. It is very important that children of God learn how to prudently conserve God’s blessing in their lives. Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us these principles in the miracle of the feeding of the multitude with 5 loaves of bread and two fish.John 6:12-13 says

“When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.”

This is also why the Bible enjoins us to learn from the ant. Not only is it hardworking, it also knows how to conserve for the future. Speaking on this important truth, Proverbs 6:6-8 says:

“Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.”

It’s so amazing that the ant will not eat its winter food in summer! Remember that the prodigal son spent all he had in the time of plenty and was later in want in the time of famine (Luke 15:14). Click To Read – Open Heaven 3 September 2018

Joseph’s principle of conservation in the time of plenty saved the whole middle-eastern region from terrible famine (Genesis 41:33-36). Beloved, do not get swept off by the system of the world which encourages spending, even on credit, and discourages savings. Learn to save for the rainy day.

TRUST AND OBEY

When we walk with the Lord in

the light of His Word,

What a glory He sheds on our

way!

While we do His good will, He

abides with us still,

And with all who will trust and

obey.

Chorus

Trust and obey, for there’s no other

Way

To be happy in Jesus, but to trust

and obey.

Not a shadow can rise, not a

cloud in the skies,

But His smile quickly drives it

away;

Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh

or a tear,

Can abide while we trust and

obey.

Not a burden we bear, not a

sorrow we share,

But our toil He doth richly

repay;

Not a grief or a loss, not a frown

or a cross,

But is blessed if we trust and

obey.

But we never can prove the

delights of His love

Until all on the alter we lay;

For the favor He shows, for the

Joy He bestows,

Are from them who will trust and

obey.

Then in fellowship sweet we

will sit at His feet,

Or we’ll walk by His side in the

way;

What He says we will do, where

He sends we will go;

Never fear, only trust and obey.

15 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!

16 And the three mighty men brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the Lord.

17 And he said, Be it far from me, O Lord, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men.

Do you know that if your service to God has not yet become sacrificial, you still have some very important heights to attain?

Some people render service to with an aspect of their life that costs them nothing, while they reserve the most precious parts to themselves. The sacrificial service of Apostle Paul stood him out among his contemporaries. The story that led to the statement he made in today’s memory verse is a case in point.

It was not that Paul doubted the prophecy that announced he would be bound in Jerusalem; rather, the fear of bounds had no impact on him because his heart was set on doing the will of the Master. For this reason, the brethren just couldn’t persuade him against going to Jerusalem (Act 21:10-14).

Today’s Bible reading also narrates a story of sacrificial service. David fantasized aloud about drinking water from the well that was at the gate of Bethlehem, but which was blocked off by a stronghold of the Philistines there at that time.

Overhearing their master’s desire, three mighty men risked their lives and broke through the host of the Philistines to get their water for David. Being a warrior himself, David knew the risk involved in going into the camp of the enemy for whatever reason. Open Heaven 2 September 2018

While he celebrated the bravery of the three mighty men, he refused to drink the water they brought because of the value he placed on these men who risked their lives to fulfil a personal longing of his. His heartfelt words are captured in 2nd Samuel 23:17

“And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do this: is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? Therefore he would not drink it….”

If these men could go to such great lengths for David, what level of sacrifice are you ready to make for your Master? Open Heaven 1 September 2018

When service becomes a sacrifice, only few people will continue to hold the fort. Nevertheless, the reward for sacrificial service is very substantial indeed.

The three men who jeopardize their lives for David were given top positions in his army. Here is the commendation and reward our Lord promises those who will step up the level of their service from ordinary to sacrificial:

And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities. Luke 19:17

I pray that God will grant you the grace to be faithful to the very end, and you will not miss your reward in heaven in Jesus’ Name.

Filled with messages from Thee,

Take my intellect, and use

Every power as Thou shalt choose

Every power as Thou shalt choose.

Take my will, and make it Thine;

It shall be no longer mine.

Take my heart; it is Thine own;

Take myself, and I will be

Ever, only, all for Thee,

INTRODUCTION:

It is the will of God for Christians to be thankful to Him (1Thessalonians 5:18). It is the master key to gaining entrance into His gate (Psalm 100:4). When thanksgiving is complemented with praise, you have access into God’s master bedroom (Courts). The primary reason God created us in His image is for fellowship, dominion and to show forth His praise (Isaiah 43:21; 1Peter 2:9).

LESSON OUTLINES

1. Why give thanks?

2. Some benefits of thanksgiving.

WHY GIVE THANKS?

Thanksgiving is the will of God for every believer at all times, under all conditions and in all circumstances (1Thessalonians 5:18). Our requests should start and end with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6) because it is a proven weapon of warfare (2Chronicles 20:20-27). As new creations in Christ, we must thank God for the salvation of our souls (Psalm 103: 3-4). Please Click To Read – Open Heaven 2 August 2018

We are to also give thanks to God for His provisions (Genesis 1:26-30); His enduring mercy (Psalm 130:7-8; 136:1-26); His miracles and deliverance (Exodus 14; 2Kings 5:1-14); For His restoration of life and hope (Ezekiel 37:1-7); For His Almightiness (Genesis 17:1); For His holiness and faithfulness (1Samuel 2:2; Numbers 23:19,23; Hebrews 6:18); His perfect love (1John 4:8). The list of what to thank God for is actually inexhaustible.

SOME BENEFITS OF THANKSGIVING

If you will cultivate the habit of showing gratitude to God, you will compel overflowing blessings from God. These blessings may include:

1. Answered prayers (John 11:41-44).
2. Multiplication of provisions (Mark 8:6-8).
3. Deliverance from bondage (Acts 16:25-26).
4. Divine peace and joy (Philippians 4:6-7).
5. Divine presence (Psalm 22:3; 95:2).
6. Complete restoration and wholeness (Luke 17:16-19).
7. Victory without a fight (2Chronicles 20:21-23).

CONCLUSION

Ingratitude is the result of vain imaginations and a darkened heart. Sometimes your thanksgiving is senseless to the ordinary person but it is more profitable to be thankful than to grumble or complain (Romans 1:21).

QUESTIONS
1. Why do you have to give thanks to God?
2. Mention 5 benefits of thanksgiving.

23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Open Heaven 2 September 2018 Points Bible in one year: Psalm 105-106, Mark 1:1-20, Hymnal: Sing hymn 15

It is one thing to have joy, and it is another thing to have unlimited joy. Walking in unlimited joy is the will of Jesus Christ for all His disciples, which is why He said to us in John 16:24:

“Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.”

Nothing gives unlimited joy as when a request is granted, particularly requests for things that matter most to a person. The question then is, why do our prayers sometimes go answered? as revealed in Isaiah 59:1-2, one answer to this question is sin. In that scripture, the Lord said:

“Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened that it cannot save;neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”

This brings us to another question: why should a child of God struggle with sin, since we know it hinders prayers from being answered?

The answer to this question lies in the fact that many children of God do not have iniquity even though they love righteousness. One way or another they assist and encourage iniquity. Another reason why our prayers go unanswered is revealed in James 4:3:

“Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.”

Open Heaven 2 September 2018

Based on this scripture, you may want to also ask, how can I avoid praying amiss? In answer to this, I John 5:14 says:

“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything  according to his will, he heareth us:

We must pray according to God’s will in order to receive the answer to our requests or petitions. Nothing gives me joy as praying for sinners to be saved and seeing them confess to the saving grace of God.

My moments of joy are those moments when those afflicted by the power of darkness are delivered after we have prayed for them at our meetings. The disciples shared in this unlimited joy when they returned from the missionary trip them Master sent them on. Open Heaven 1 September 2018

The Bible says that they came back rejoicing, not because they were given gifts, clothes, houses or cars, but because they ministered deliverance to the oppressed and their prayers were answered (Luke 10:17). However, in Luke 10:20, our Lord recommended what should be the greatest source of unlimited joy to us, saying:

“Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.”

Do you have this unlimited joy?

Nearer, my God, to Thee,

Nearer, my God, to Thee,

Darkness comes over me,

My rest a stone;

Yet in my dreams I’d be

Nearer, my God, to Thee

Nearer, my God, to Thee

Nearer to Thee.

There let me see the sight,

An open heaven;

All that thou sendest me,

In mercy given;

Angles to beckon me

Nearer, my God, to Thee

Nearer, my God, to Thee

Nearer to Thee

Then, with my walking thoughts

Bright with Thy praise,

Out of my stony griefs

Bethel I’ll raise,

So by my woes to be

Nearer, my God, to Thee,
