Topic: Broken Homes

BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 25:24-34

24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25 And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.

26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.

27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

28 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

29 And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint:

30 And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright.

32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

MEMORY VERSE: Mark 3:25

INTRODUCTION

Families are the bedrock of society. When families fall apart, society falls into social and cultural decline.

The plan of God for homes is for them to remain united in body and spirit (Psalms 133:1). A broken home is a family in which the parents are separated or divorced.

So many children and estranged partners have suffered the consequences of a broken home. This has caused society and the church a lot of unrest. It is, therefore, necessary to examine the causes of broken homes and their remedy.

OUTLINES:

  1. CAUSES OF BROKEN HOMES
  2. EFFECTS AND REMEDY FOR BROKEN HOMES

1. CAUSES OF BROKEN HOMES

Some factors that bring about a broken home are stated below:

1. Cultural shift – a decline of religion and morality (2 Timothy 3:1-5; Colossians 2:8).

2. A wrong choice in marriage (Proverbs 21:9; Proverbs 19:13).

3. The negative influence of parents, friends, etc. (Genesis 2:24; Proverbs 13:20).

4. Lack of genuine sacrificial love (1 John 3:16; Romans 5:7-8).

5. Communication Breakdown (Matthew 5:37).

6. Sexual unfaithfulness between a couple (Hebrews 13:4).

7. Stinginess, meanness, or poor economic planning (1 Timothy 6:10).

8. .Preference for a child over another child (siblings) (Genesis 25:28).

9. Undue attachment to a job or other things than the family (Psalm 127:2).

10. Worldly pleasures (1 John 2:15).

Some factors that bring about a broken home are stated below.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

Discuss the role which the husband, wife and children must play to prevent a broken home.

2. EFFECTS AND REMEDY FOR BROKEN HOMES

Some effects of a broken home include:

  1. Husbands abandon spouses and children.
  2. Wives walk out of the marriage.
  3. Either or both live alone or with strange fellows.
  4. Children suffer emotional stress arising from abandonment.
  5. Children may lose interest in relationships and life in general
  6. Children are likely to exhibit anti-social behaviours.
  7. Complete and unified parental love is lacking.
  8. Society witnesses an increase in crime rate.

Those who suffer the pains of broken homes can apply the following solutions:

  1. Embrace the love of Jesus through salvation. (Romans 5:8).
  2. Commit everything to God in prayer. He is greater than any difficulty. (Psalm 50: 15; Jeremiah 32:27).
  3. Ask God to make you a better person in the present circumstances. (Psalm 51:10)
  4. Seek the help of other Christians. (Proverbs 11:14).
  5. Seek Professional help and counsel.
  6. Learn to forgive and seek reconciliation or restoration. (Ephesians 4:32; Romans 12:18; Isaiah 57:18).
  7. Be patient to meet your spouse at their point of need. (Ecclesiastes 7:8; 1 Corinthians 7:1)

TOPIC: DRUG/SUBSTANCE ABUSE

BIBLE PASSAGE: Ephesians 5:6-12

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

Therefore do not be partakers with them.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

(for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth),

10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.

11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.

12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.

INTRODUCTION

Drug or substance abuse is the maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress. People use illicit (hard) drugs for different reasons.

Stimulants (cocaine, nicotine, caffeine, etc.) speed up messages travelling between the brain and the body. They make one feel awake and energized.

Depressants (Alcohol, heroin, codeine, Tramadol, inhalants, etc.) reduce the level of stimulation and arousal They slow down a person’s ability to respond to unexpected situations.

Hallucinogens (ecstasy, cannabis, etc.) cause profound distortions in a person’s perceptions of reality, otherwise known as hallucinations. The usage of drugs in itself is not evil but abuse

OUTLINES:

  1. EXCUSES AND EFFECTS
  2. ANTIDOTES TO DRUG/SUBSTANCE ABUSE

1. EXCUSES AND EFFECTS

There are several excuses for the prevalence of drug/substance abuse among youths. Some of which include:

1. Peer Pressure (1 Corinthians 15:33; Proverbs 1:10).

2. Undue Exposure: Youths tend to practice what they watch others do (Exodus 23:2). Also, exposure to high-risk jobs could lead to drug misuse.

3. Curiosity: Many youths want to indulge in DIY (do it yourself) in order to have a feeling of the effect of the drugs (Romans 1:24).

4. Unpleasant situations: Wrong belief” that drugs will ameliorate the seemingly unpleasant situation (Proverbs 24:10; Ecclesiastes 7:14).

5. Family Breakdown: Dysfunctional family may encourage drug abuse (Luke 11:17b).

The adverse effect of drug/substance abuse can be:

Biological (Liver damage, Cancer of the lungs, Diabetes, impotence, infertility, accidents, and eventual death);

Psychological (Depression, Psychosis, suicide, low self-esteem, personality changes, etc.);

Social (unfulfilled dreams, marital disharmony, financial difficulties, relational problems, irrational decisions, etc.);

Spiritual (Prayerlessness, lack of interest in the things of God, apostasy, spiritual death, etc.).

Summarily, destruction awaits anyone engaging in drug/substance abuse (1 Corinthians 3:16-17)

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

Students should disclose if they always consult a physician before using any drug

2. ANTIDOTES TO DRUG/SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Christians are all required to be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us including our earthly bodies (1 Peter 4:10). As Christians, our bodies are not our own – we “have been bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

We need to be sober and avoid being ensnared through deception (1 Peter 4:7). 1 Corinthians 15:33 tells us that”.. evil communications corrupt good manners.” It is therefore expedient to keep godly friends (2 Corinthians 6:14; Psalm 1:1) and flee from youthful lust (2 Timothy 2:22).

Parents/guardians must be positive role models and be familiar with their children’s friends (Titus 2:7).

Intentional teaching of the undiluted word of God (Romans 14:19), mentoring and discipleship, (2 Timothy 2:2) should be put in place to forestall the spread of drug/substance abuse.

Peradventure you are already involved, know that there is a way out.

Pray to God for forgiveness.

Seek help from a pastor and/or professional.

Do not let the devil deceive you that it is too late (James 5:16).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2:

Students should make a conscious effort to reach out to anyone they know who is suffering from drug/substance abuse.

CONCLUSION: RCCG YAYA Sunday School Youth 14 April 2024

All hands must be on deck to fight drug/substance abuse.

QUESTION

1. What is drug/substance abuse?

2. Mention two effects of drug/substance abuse.

OPEN HEAVEN 14 APRIL 2024 BIBLE READING Psalms 133:1-3

1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the Lord commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

Be a vessel of evangelism and share these life-changing messages, prayers, and declarations with the precious people around you.

OPEN HEAVEN 14 APRIL 2024 MESSAGE

God loves unity; wherever He finds people uniting in His name, He will show up. You can see a good example of this in 2 Chronicles 5:13:

It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;

In the above passage, as the trumpeters, singers and musicians all sang as one, God’s presence came down like a cloud and filled the temple.

God loves it when His children worship Him in one accord. This is why Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:20,
“Where two or three people are gathered in my name, there will I be.”

At the upper room in Acts 2, the Bible says that when the people were in one accord, the Holy Spirit filled the room with a sound like a mighty rushing wind.

Wherever believers are gathered in unity, God will show up in His glory.

Today’s Bible reading tells us that when brethren come together in unity, it is like the anointing oil that was poured on Aaron’s head which went all the way down to his feet.

Do you know what that means? It means that it is only when God’s people are united that the anointing can flow amongst them.

Without unity, the corporate anointing will not flow.

The reason many churches are not experiencing the power of God amongst them is that they are not united.

Where there is gossip, strife and backbiting, don’t expect the power of God to flow. These vices are not of God, and so, God cannot be where they exist.

1 Corinthians 12:12 says that we are all different parts of one body. If the hand is envious of the eyes and the leg is keeping malice with the head, how can the body function effectively?

When we become united in our local assembly and in the body of Christ as a whole, we will see great miracles amongst us that will amaze the whole world.

If you are a pastor reading this now, you should ensure that all forms of strife amongst workers and/or members of your local assembly are resolved today.

OPEN HEAVEN 14 APRIL 2024 KEY POINT

Call a member of your local assembly and say, “I love you with the love of Christ.”

RCCG HYMN 30: When We Walk With The Lord

1. When we walk with the Lord,
In the light of His word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will
He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain:
Trust and obey!
For there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus,
But to trust and obey.

2. But we never can prove
The delights of His love,
Until all on the altar we lay,
For the favour He shows
And the joy He bestows
Are for them who will trust and obey. [Refrain]

3. Then in fellowship sweet
We will sit at His feet,
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way,
What He says we will do,
Where He sends we will go,
Never fear, only trust and obey. [Refrain]

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 14 APRIL 2024 MESSAGE

When we set out at the beginning of a new year to achieve our goals, there is usually a lot of excitement that gets people pumped up to succeed against all odds.

However, there is no certainty that all goals will be achieved due to different factors.

As a child of God, your mind must be made up to achieve success despite the roadblocks that may be confronting you in your studies, career, walk with God, et cetera.

Today’s memory verse tells us about a king who determined his success in battle even before it started.

The man of God in the story expressed his disappointment that he smote the ground only thrice, and thus, his fate was sealed (2 Kings 13:19).

Beloved, God will present several opportunities before you this year, and it is important that you are sensitive in the spirit to know when they come so that you will have breakthroughs.

The opportunities may be in things you have failed at before; however, do not be afraid to try again. Success does not usually come immediately, so if you are given other chances, please try again.

Be like Peter, who said to Jesus, “Nevertheless at thy word, I will let down the net.” 33 Prayer Point: Father, please enlarge my capacity this year and don’t let me give up.

HYMN 9 – DEEPER, DEEPER IN THE LOVE OF JESUS

1. Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus
Daily let me go;
Higher, higher in the school of wisdom,
More of grace to know.

CHORUS
O deeper yet I pray,
And higher ev’ry day,
And wiser, blessed, Lord,
In Thy precious, holy word.

2. Deeper, deeper! blessed Holy Spirit,
Take me deeper still,
Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus
And His perfect will.

3. Deeper, deeper! tho’ it cost hard trials,
Deeper let me go!
Rooted in the holy love of Jesus,
Let me fruitful grow.

4. Deeper, higher ev’ry day in Jesus,
Till all conflict past,
Finds me conqueror, and in His own image
Perfected at last.

OPEN HEAVEN 13 APRIL 2024 MESSAGE

I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.
John 9:4

The above passage says, “The works of Him that sent me,” not the works of your pastor.

This was why I laughed when I heard someone say to me some time ago, “I’ve been serving you all these years.”

I was amazed, so I responded, “Serving me?!” I thought we were serving God together on the same platform.

You need to really know whom you are serving. Are you serving God, your pastor, or your Head of Department in church?

If you are serving God, you won’t only behave well when your pastor or Head of Department is around, but you will do so at all times because the One you claim to be serving can see you all the time.

For some people, they are serving their Neighbours. They want their Neighbours to see them as fervent Christians, but, in secret, they keep committing sins.

If you really know you are serving God, you will care more about being holy in His eyes than looking holy in public.

Revelations 4:11 says,
“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

You are to please God irrespective of the people around you.

Lastly, some people claim to be serving God, but they are actually serving their needs; they come to Him only because they need something from Him.

Everything they do for God is motivated by what they want to get from Him.

For example, this is why there are people who reduce their commitment in church or even stop going altogether once they get the job that they have been praying about.

For some, they are only in church because they are looking for a godly husband or wife to marry.

In John 6:24-26, Jesus sent the people who were coming to Him because of bread and fish away.

Such people’s service is not acceptable to Him; He can see their real intentions and does not count them among His children.

Are you serving God, people or your needs?

Beloved, you need to be very clear about whom you serve. Serve God for who He is, and not for anything else.

RCCG HYMN 23: Take My Life And Let It Be

1 Take my life and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
let them flow in endless praise,
let them flow in endless praise.

2 Take my hands and let them move
at the impulse of thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
swift and beautiful for thee,
swift and beautiful for thee.

3 Take my voice and let me sing
always, only, for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
filled with messages from thee,
filled with messages from thee.

4 Take my silver and my gold;
not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
every power as thou shalt choose,
every power as thou shalt choose.

5 Take my will and make it thine;
it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart it is thine own;
it shall be thy royal throne,
it shall be thy royal throne.

6 Take my love; my Lord, I pour
at thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be
ever, only, all for thee,
ever, only, all for thee.

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 13 APRIL 2024 MESSAGE

Today’s memory verse, which is popularly called ‘the golden rule’, was given by the Lord Jesus to place emphasis on how to relate with other people.

He enjoined His disciples to treat people as they themselves would like to be treated. If you want to be treated nicely, treat others nicely because of the grace that God has given you, so that, regardless of how you feel in any situation, you can offer the same grace that God extends to you daily.

You probably think that sometimes you are nice to some people, and in return, you get hatred from them.

Unfortunately, this happens to some teenagers and makes them feel worthless. I must let you know that people will not always treat you the way they want to be treated or the way you want to be treated, but that should not stop you from doing the right thing.

Don’t let anyone influence you into behaving badly. Rather, always be kind to the people, whether they are your friends or family, or whether it is convenient or not.

My dear child, loving everyone at all times is a tough task to accomplish, but with the help of the Holy Spirit, you can do it.

4. Did ever saint find this friend forsake him?
No not one! no not one!
Or sinner find that he would not take him?
