OPEN HEAVEN 5 FEBRUARY 2020 WEDNESDAY: LET YOUR MODERATION BE KNOWN 3

OPEN HEAVEN 5 FEBRUARY 2020 MEMORISE: For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. – (James 3:2)

OPEN HEAVEN 5 FEBRUARY 2020 READ: JAMES 3:2-13 (KJV)

2. For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

3. Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

4. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

5. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

6. And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity; so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

7. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind;

8. But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

11. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

12. Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.

13. Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

OPEN HEAVEN 5 FEBRUARY 2020 MESSAGE WITH HYMN, PRAYER POINTS, DAILY DECLARATIONS AND BIBLE READING

Good Morning Beloved, If you are visiting this platform for the first time save this website (rccgonline.org) on your device to ease your next visit. God bless you!

In Isaiah 40:31, Christians who wait upon the Lord are compared to ‘an eagle’ – often referred to as the ‘king of birds’.

There are many kinds of birds; why did the Lord choose the eagle and not the parrot or some other kind for this illustration? The answer is not far-fetched.

Several distinguishing factors set the eagle apart from the parrot and indeed other birds. While an eagle is big, strong and a high flyer, the parrot is weak and cannot fly as high.

While one may enjoy the company of a parrot, when serious issues are to be discussed, it is usually shut out while ‘an eagle’ is invited. Are you a parrot or an eagle?

The eagle does not talk too much; it tends to act instead. It doesn’t move with a flock, like many people with gossip cliques today.

Perhaps this is why it soars above storms – it has an immense ability to use the storms to its advantage.

How you use your mouth can determine if you will overcome a storm or be subdued by it. Watch it! Talk only when necessary.

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.” – Proverbs 13:3

Going by the above, the less you say, the less likely you are to get into trouble and vice versa. Words are powerful, so be careful with them.

You cannot retrieve any utterance. Matthew 12:36 says we shall be held accountable for every idle word we speak, so always think before you speak.

You don’t have to respond every time you are criticized. You don’t have to always say what’s on your mind. Bridle your tongue before it puts you in trouble.

Ask yourself: Why do I talk too much? For some, it’s because they like noise and cannot stay quiet.

Some want to impress; others talk to show they are good debaters and yet others, to display how current they are.

If you talk too much, control your tongue or excuse yourself whenever you find yourself in such situations and soon enough, you will find yourself talking less and with moderation.

PREVIOUS DAY:

OPEN HEAVEN 5 FEBRUARY 2020 HYMNAL:

HYMN 20 – NEARER, MY GOD TO THEE

1. Nearer, my God to Thee,
Nearer to Thee;
E’en though it be a cross
That raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be,
Nearer, my God, to Thee, (2ce)
Nearer to Thee!

2. Though, like the wanderer,
The sun gone down,
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone,
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer, my God, to Thee, (2ce)
Nearer to Thee!

3. There let the way appear
Steps unto heaven;
All that Thou send’st to me
In mercy given;
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee, (2ce)
Nearer to Thee!

4. Then with my waking thoughts
Bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs
Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God, to Thee, (2ce)
Nearer to Thee!

5. Or if on joyful wing
Cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon, and stars forgot,
Upward I fly,
Still all my song shall be,
Nearer, my God, to Thee, (2ce)
Nearer to Thee!

OPEN HEAVEN 5 FEBRUARY 2020 BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: EXODUS 19-21

exodus 19-21 king james version (kjv)

chapter 19

1 in the third month, when the children of israel were gone forth out of the land of egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of sinai.

2 for they were departed from rephidim, and were come to the desert of sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there israel camped before the mount.

3 and moses went up unto god, and the lord called unto him out of the mountain, saying, thus shalt thou say to the house of jacob, and tell the children of israel;

4 ye have seen what i did unto the egyptians, and how i bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.

5 now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

6 and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. these are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of israel.

7 and moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the lord commanded him.

8 and all the people answered together, and said, all that the lord hath spoken we will do. and moses returned the words of the people unto the lord.

9 and the lord said unto moses, lo, i come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when i speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. and moses told the words of the people unto the lord.

10 and the lord said unto moses, go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes,

11 and be ready against the third day: for the third day the lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount sinai.

12 and thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death:

13 there shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.

14 and moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.

15 and he said unto the people, be ready against the third day: come not at your wives.

16 and it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

17 and moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with god; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.

18 and mount sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

19 and when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, moses spake, and god answered him by a voice.

20 and the lord came down upon mount sinai, on the top of the mount: and the lord called moses up to the top of the mount; and moses went up.

21 and the lord said unto moses, go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the lord to gaze, and many of them perish.

22 and let the priests also, which come near to the lord, sanctify themselves, lest the lord break forth upon them.

23 and moses said unto the lord, the people cannot come up to mount sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.

24 and the lord said unto him, away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the lord, lest he break forth upon them.

25 so moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them.

chapter 20

1 and god spake all these words, saying,

2 i am the lord thy god, which have brought thee out of the land of egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3 thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for i the lord thy god am a jealous god, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6 and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

7 thou shalt not take the name of the lord thy god in vain; for the lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8 remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10 but the seventh day is the sabbath of the lord thy god: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 for in six days the lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12 honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the lord thy god giveth thee.

13 thou shalt not kill.

14 thou shalt not commit adultery.

15 thou shalt not steal.

16 thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17 thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.

18 and all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.

19 and they said unto moses, speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not god speak with us, lest we die.

20 and moses said unto the people, fear not: for god is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

21 and the people stood afar off, and moses drew near unto the thick darkness where god was.

22 and the lord said unto moses, thus thou shalt say unto the children of israel, ye have seen that i have talked with you from heaven.

23 ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.

24 an altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where i record my name i will come unto thee, and i will bless thee.

25 and if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.

26 neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

chapter 21

1 now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them.

2 if thou buy an hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

3 if he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him.

4 if his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself.

5 and if the servant shall plainly say, i love my master, my wife, and my children; i will not go out free:

6 then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever.

7 and if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.

8 if she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her.

9 and if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters.

10 if he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.

11 and if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money.

12 he that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death.

13 and if a man lie not in wait, but god deliver him into his hand; then i will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee.

14 but if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die.

15 and he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.

16 and he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

17 and he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

18 and if men strive together, and one smite another with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed:

19 if he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be quit: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed.

20 and if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished.

21 notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.

22 if men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

23 and if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life,

24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

25 burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

26 and if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye’s sake.

27 and if he smite out his manservant’s tooth, or his maidservant’s tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth’s sake.

28 if an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit.

29 but if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death.

30 if there be laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatsoever is laid upon him.

31 whether he have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him.

32 if the ox shall push a manservant or a maidservant; he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.

33 and if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein;

34 the owner of the pit shall make it good, and give money unto the owner of them; and the dead beast shall be his.

35 and if one man’s ox hurt another’s, that he die; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money of it; and the dead ox also they shall divide.

36 or if it be known that the ox hath used to push in time past, and his owner hath not kept him in; he shall surely pay ox for ox; and the dead shall be his own.

As much as food is necessary for humans to stay alive, it could also be the cause of untimely death for some.

This is primarily because such people have refused to exercise moderation and care in their food intake.

Today’s memory verse says you should control your appetite, exercise restraint even if it appears you may die by doing so. Don’t be like Esau who, because of hunger, in Genesis 25:32 claimed:

… Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

Listen: You will not die by exercising discipline on yourself. It is indiscipline that kills. Sometime ago, some rats were used for an experiment.

They were put in two groups – A and B. The ones in the first group – A, were fed very well, thus they grew fresh and robust while the ones in group B were given fewer rations, so they were not as fat as those in the first group.

After some time, all the rats were injected with the same measure of a disease. Those in group A died while those in B survived.

The researchers found a strong connection between overfeeding and the failure of the rats in group A survive the disease.

Watch the quantity of food you consume, especially when you are about to go to bed. It may be difficult at the start, but keep at it, your body will adjust.

Avoid junk and genetically modified food. As much as possible, reduce how often you take canned food.

In fact, eating too much processed food has been linked with the development of cancer.

It is best to eat organic fruits and vegetables as they are healthy. Grow some of your food if you can.

God is interested in your spiritual wellbeing but He is also very interested in your health.

That is why He took care of sicknesses through the stripes on His body (Isaiah 53:5) before His crucifixion for your sins at Calvary.

He needs you to take care of your body because the healthier you are, the more effective you will be in His service.

HYMN 27 – TAKE MY LIFE, AND LET IT BE

1. Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.

2. Take my hands, and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love;
Take my feet, and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee.

3. Take my voice and let me sing
Always, only, for my King;
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee.

4. Take my silver and my gold;
Not a mite would I withhold;
Take my intellect, and use
Every power as Thou shalt choose.

5. Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine:
Take my heart, it is Thine own;
It shall be Thy royal throne.

6. Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store;
Take myself, and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.

OPEN HEAVEN 4 FEBRUARY 2020 BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: EXODUS 16-18

Exodus 16-18 King James Version (KJV)

Chapter 16

1 And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.

2 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness:

3 And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

4 Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.

5 And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.

6 And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel, At even, then ye shall know that the Lord hath brought you out from the land of Egypt:

7 And in the morning, then ye shall see the glory of the Lord; for that he heareth your murmurings against the Lord: and what are we, that ye murmur against us?

8 And Moses said, This shall be, when the Lord shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that the Lord heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what are we? your murmurings are not against us, but against the Lord.

9 And Moses spake unto Aaron, Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near before the Lord: for he hath heard your murmurings.

10 And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.

11 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

12 I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God.

13 And it came to pass, that at even the quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the host.

14 And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground.

15 And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat.

16 This is the thing which the Lord hath commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; take ye every man for them which are in his tents.

17 And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less.

18 And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.

19 And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning.

20 Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.

21 And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.

22 And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.

23 And he said unto them, This is that which the Lord hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.

24 And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.

25 And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the Lord: to day ye shall not find it in the field.

26 Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.

27 And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.

28 And the Lord said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?

29 See, for that the Lord hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

31 And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna: and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.

32 And Moses said, This is the thing which the Lord commandeth, Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations; that they may see the bread wherewith I have fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt.

33 And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it up before the Lord, to be kept for your generations.

34 As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept.

35 And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.

36 Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.

Chapter 17

1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the Lord, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the Lord?

3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

4 And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

5 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us, or not?

8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

12 But Moses hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

14 And the Lord said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

16 For he said, Because the Lord hath sworn that the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

Chapter 18

1 When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt;

2 Then Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back,

3 And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:

4 And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:

5 And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:

6 And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.

7 And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.

8 And Moses told his father in law all that the Lord had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the Lord delivered them.

9 And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the Lord had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.

10 And Jethro said, Blessed be the Lord, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

11 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.

12 And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father in law before God.

13 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.

14 And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?

15 And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:

16 When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.

17 And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.

18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:

20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.

21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.

23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.

24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.

26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.

27 And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.

MEMORY VERSE :
Matthew 5:14 – “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”

BIBLE TEXT: 1 Kings 5

1 And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David.

2 And Solomon sent to Hiram, saying,

3 Thou knowest how that David my father could not build an house unto the name of the LORD his God for the wars which were about him on every side, until the LORD put them under the soles of his feet.

4 But now the LORD my God hath given me rest on every side, so that there is neither adversary nor evil occurrent.

5 And, behold, I purpose to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God, as the LORD spake unto David my father, saying, Thy son, whom I will set upon thy throne in thy room, he shall build an house unto my name.

6 Now therefore command thou that they hew me cedar trees out of Lebanon; and my servants shall be with thy servants: and unto thee will I give hire for thy servants according to all that thou shalt appoint: for thou knowest that there is not among us any that can skill to hew timber like unto the Sidonians.

7 And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the LORD this day, which hath given unto David a wise son over this great people.

8 And Hiram sent to Solomon, saying, I have considered the things which thou sentest to me for: and I will do all thy desire concerning timber of cedar, and concerning timber of fir.

9 My servants shall bring them down from Lebanon unto the sea: and I will convey them by sea in floats unto the place that thou shalt appoint me, and will cause them to be discharged there, and thou shalt receive them: and thou shalt accomplish my desire, in giving food for my household.

10 So Hiram gave Solomon cedar trees and fir trees according to all his desire.

11 And Solomon gave Hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat for food to his household, and twenty measures of pure oil: thus gave Solomon to Hiram year by year.

12 And the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as he promised him: and there was peace between Hiram and Solomon; and they two made a league together.

13 And king Solomon raised a levy out of all Israel; and the levy was thirty thousand men.

14 And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month by courses: a month they were in Lebanon, and two months at home: and Adoniram was over the levy.

15 And Solomon had threescore and ten thousand that bare burdens, and fourscore thousand hewers in the mountains;

16 Beside the chief of Solomon’s officers which were over the work, three thousand and three hundred, which ruled over the people that wrought in the work.

17 And the king commanded, and they brought great stones, costly stones, and hewed stones, to lay the foundation of the house.

18 And Solomon’s builders and Hiram’s builders did hew them, and the stonesquarers: so they prepared timber and stones to build the house.

BIBLE PASSAGE: JOSHUA 1:1-9

Joshua:1.1
After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying:

Joshua:1.2
“Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to them — the children of Israel.

Joshua:1.3
“Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.

Joshua:1.4
“From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the River Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory.

Joshua:1.5
“No man shall [be able to] stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, [so] I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you.

Joshua:1.6
“Be strong and of good courage, for to this people you shall divide as an inheritance the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.

Joshua:1.7
“Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.

Joshua:1.8
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Joshua:1.9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God [is] with you wherever you go.”

INTRODUCTION

Joshua the son of Nun (Jo’s. 1:1) can be described as the military aide of Moses (Exodus 17:8-9).

He was ordained and appointed to succeed Moses. God and Moses ordained him (Numbers 27:18-23).

He made his first appearance in Exodus 17:8-16. He is of the tribe of Ephraim and his original name was ‘Hoshea’ meaning ‘Salvation’ ( Deuteronomy 32:44) which is also spelt ‘Oshea’ (Numbers 13:8).

Moses renamed him Joshua meaning ‘Jehovah saves’ (Numbers 13:16). Alternative spelling of his name are ‘Jehoshua’ (Numbers 13:16). ‘Jehoshuah’ (1Chron. 7:27) and ‘ Jeshua’ (Nehemiah 8:17). He died at the age of one hundred and ten (Joshua 24:29).

OUTLINES OUTLINES

1. CHARACTER AND ACHIEVEMENTS

2. LESSONS FROM JOSHUA’S LIFE

CHARACTER AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Joshua was full of the spirit of wisdom (Deuteronomy 34:9). He was a warrior who led Israel to battle from the time of Moses (Exodus 17:9-15).

He was optimistic together with Caleb ( Numbers 14:6). A faithful follower of Moses ( Exodus 33:8-11). He accompanied Moses to Mount Sinai and waited for him at the bottom of the mountain while Moses climbed the mountain to receive from God the Ten Commandments (Exodus 24:13-14; Ex. 32:15-19). He was humble enough to understudy Moses.

Joshua was committed to serving God and also made his family to serve God (Jo’s. 24:15). He had a strong faith in God even in the battle such that he altered the course of nature ( Joshua 10:12-14).

His farewell message condemned idolatry as he wanted Israel to serve God (Joshua 23 and 24). He took counsel from God before doing anything except in the case of the Gibeonite (Joshua 5:13+14) and the people of ‘Ai’ (Joshua 7:3) where he allowed people to influence his decisions.

Joshua succeeded Moses (Joshua 1:1-2,5). Joshua parted river Jordan ( Joshua 3:13-17). He took Israel to the Promised Land and divided the conquered cities among the tribes of Israel as God mandated him (Jo’s. 1:6).

Joshua led the miraculous and historical conquest of Jericho (Joshua 6). He was able to charge the Israelites not to deviate from serving God; a legacy that lasted after his death (Joshua 24:14-16; 20:24).

LESSONS FROM JOSHUA’S LIFE

Believers should hold on to God’s counsel and remain strong to the end ( Jo’s. 1:6-7; Eph. 6:10-11).

We should learn to be obedient and follow through with detailed divine instructions ( Joshua 3; 6:1-21; 1Samuel 15:22; 2Corinthians 10:6).

We should be bold in the face of challenges ( Joshua 5:13-14; Joshua 10:12-14; 2Timothy 1:7). Like Joshua believers must shun unfaithfulness ( Joshua 7:19-26; 1Corinthians 4:2).

CONCLUSION

Believers who remain obedient to divine instructions will enjoy divine help always.

QUESTIONS

1. Mention three attributes that characterized Joshua.

2. What lessons can believers learn from Joshua’s life?

THEME: BEATEN FOR YOU

MEMORISE: But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

READ: Isaiah 53:4-7

4. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

5. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

6. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

MESSAGE:

God has made provisions that anytime that you have headache, stomach ache or any other illness, all you have to do is remember that He surrendered His only begotten son to be beaten so that you can be healed.

I once fell ill with pain all over my body and I kept saying by His stripes, I am healed. The devil came and told me that if I had been healed, why was I still sleeping on my bed?

Then I got up and decided to go to church. The devil said I would faint. I shunned him.

After some time, I had the urge to go and ease myself and after doing this, I suddenly discovered that I was totally whole. The pains had completely gone. The devil ran away in shame.

Jesus received painful lashes on His body in order to set you free from diseases. What you need to do is to believe in the word of God concerning healing and to use them when the devil raises his ugly head.

But you also need to consiously live a healthy life. Mind what you eat and rest when you should.

ACTION POINT:
If there is any disease in your body, lay your hand on yourself and speak the word of God over it.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Exodus 28-30 ; Matthew 22:1-22

Hymn 17

1. My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Savior divine!
Now hear me while I pray,
Take all my guilt away,
Oh, let me from this day
Be wholly Thine!

2. May Thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire!
As Thou hast died for me,
Oh, may my love to Thee
Pure, warm and changeless be,
A living fire!

3. While life’s dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be Thou my guide;
Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow’s tears away,
Nor let me ever stray
From Thee aside.

4. When ends life’s transient dream,
When death’s cold sullen stream
Shall o’er me roll;
Blest Savior, then, in love,
Fear and distrust remove;
Oh, bear me safe above,
A ransomed soul.
