One day, my wife called to check on a sick person we had been praying for.
After the phone call.
She told me the fellow said, “Help me to thank God that I was able to wear my clothes by myself today.
” Then I thought to myself, “I have never thought of thanking God for the ability to dress up by myself.”
This year, do not pay attention to the things you don’t have.

Instead, focus on the great things that God has done and will still do for you.

Don’t go into the Lord’s presence, bombarding Him with numerous requests and petitions.
Thank Him and appreciate Him instead for all He has done, and He will surpass your expectations.
God enjoys being with people who genuinely thank Him and sing praises of His name.
However, He frowns at those who murmur.
Many Israelites, particularly the adults who left Egypt, did not get to the Promised Land because of their constant murmuring against Him, causing their bodies to fall in the wilderness (Numbers 14:29-30).
My dear child, learn from Joseph, who didn’t murmur while he was in slavery or was jailed for a crime he did not commit.
Eventually, he fulfilled his destiny, and God made him prosperous (Genesis 45:4-8).

TOPIC: FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH

BIBLE PASSAGE: 2 Timothy 3:13-17

13 But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

INTRODUCTION

The Greek word for truth is aletheia, which means to un-hide or hide nothing. It conveys the thought that truth is always there, always open and available for all to see, with nothing being hidden or obscured.

The Hebrew word truth is emeth, which means firmness, constancy, and duration. Such a definition implies an everlasting substance and something that can be relied upon.

Truth must originate from somewhere. Ignoring the truth always leads to undesired consequences.

Jesus made the simple statement I am truth (John 14:6) and John 1:1, 14 tells that Jesus is the Word.

Mathematically, it means:

If Jesus = The Truth…… (John 14:6) .equation 1.

And Jesus = The Word… (John 1:1) equation 2.

Therefore, the Word is the Truth (John 17:17).

The Truth is not relative; rather it is absolute, accurate, and unchangeable (2 Corinthians 13:8; John 6:63).

The truth of God’s word is divinely inspired and therefore profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16; Psalm 119:9).

The word gives wisdom and direction (Colossians 3:16; Psalm 119:105).

God’s word is sharp and powerful (Hebrews 4:12).

If we know the word of God, we know the truth that will deliver and make us free (Psalm 107:20; John 8:32).

The word God is incorruptible: it gives us a solid spiritual foundation in the faith and an inheritance among the saints of God (1 Peter 1:23; Acts 20:32).

2. BEWARE OF FALSE DOCTRINES

Almost speedily as the word is running with sound doctrines, the devil is also making efforts, as a busybody, to counter the effort of God through his diverse and varying false doctrines such as:

i. That Jesus is not the Son of God (1 John 4:1-3).

ii. That there is no resurrection of the dead (1 Corinthians 15:13-19).

iii. That the days of miracles are over (Hebrews 13:8).

iv. That the days of tithing are over (Malachi 3:10-13).

v. That holiness is impossible (Philippians 4:13; Luke 1:37).

1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession.

And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?

While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things.

And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.

Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.

And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?”

She said, “Yes, for so much.”

1. THE OFFSHOOTS OF LIES

Some of the offshoots of lies are:

a. Falsehood: This is a false statement, a misrepresentation of the fact, the act of rendering something false by fraudulent changes such as documents or measures, (Proverbs 11:1; 20:10; Job 21:34) or simply not telling the truth (Psalm 144:8).

b. Exaggeration: This is closely related to falsehood. It is the act of giving to overstatement and needless embellishment of the truth or a bloated statement that does not exist (Matthew 5:37).

c. Deceit: This is the act or practice of deceiving; concealment or distortion of the truth for the purpose of misleading, fraud, cheating, etc. A deceitful person practices mischief without any form of restraint (Psalms 10:7; 50:19). An individual who is untrustworthy, two-faced, or fraudulent is deceitful.

d. Hypocrisy: An outright display of insincerity by virtue of pretending to have qualities or beliefs that one does not really have (Matthew 23:28; 1 Timothy 4:2).

e. Half-Truth: A statement that is only partly true, especially intended to deceive (Acts 5:1-3, 8). It is another way of being economical with the truth.

f. Guile: It is the quality of being crafty or the use of tricks to deceive someone usually to extract money from them (1 Peter 2:1; 2 Corinthians 12:16-17).

g. Flattering: To praise excessively, especially from motives of self-interest (Psalms 5:9).

2. CONSEQUENCES AND REMEDIES

A. The penalties for these offshoots of lies include:

i. Ruin (Proverbs 26:28b).

ii. Getting cut off from God (Job 13:16; Psalm 12:3).

iii. Being detestable (Proverbs 6:16-17).

iv. Being susceptible to punishment (Proverbs 19:5).

v. Being accustomed to hypocrisy and iniquity (Matthew 23:28-29).

vi. Momentary joy (Job 20:5).

vii. Not seeing good days (1 Peter 3:10; Job 32:22).

viii. No liar will make heaven (Revelation 21:27).

B. There are a number of things a can do to avoid telling lies. These include:

1. Being precise in communications (Matthew 5:37).

2. Telling the whole truth. This is a virtue that brings honour (Exodus 18:21).

3. Not playing smart (Proverbs 3:7).

4. Avoiding hasty responses (James 1:19).

5. Speaking without any forced brilliance (1 Thessalonians 2:3).

6. Employing God’s wisdom when speaking (James 3:17).

7. Putting a check on our utterances (Job 27:4).

1. Praise God for the year 2023; praise Him for every month of the year. Thank Him for preserving you throughout the year.
2. Father, please keep me alive to see the year 2024 in sound mind and divine health in the mighty name of Jesus,

3. Father, please make the year 2024 my best year yet, in Jesus’ name.

4. Father, let all Your plans for me in 2024 be fulfilled in Jesus’ name.
5. Father, help me know You more, love you more, and serve You better in 2024.
6. Father, give me joy in every area of my life this coming year in Jesus’ name.
7. Father, put Your shield of protection around me and my loved ones in Jesus’ name.

Opening Prayer:

Father, we bless You for bringing us to the end of another year.

Previous Knowledge:

Leader should remind members that they should understand the time in which we are, the tools needed to understand and make the best use of the time.

TODAY’S LESSON

Memory Verse: Rev. 12:11

“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto death.”

Bible Text: Psalms 103:1-5

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

LESSON INTRODUCTION:

Thanksgiving is an instrument of victory given to believers by God. Though it is always given after a victory is recorded as in the case of the children of Israel after crossing the Red Sea and the case of Hannah after giving birth to Samuel.

Testimonies is the act of sharing with others what God had done in the life of a believer and what God did for the believer as in the case of David testifying before King Saul that God helped him to kill a bear and a lion.
