OPEN HEAVEN 8 JANUARY 2024 MESSAGE

When you develop the habit of starting every day with God, you will have a source of strength to draw from throughout each day.
Psychologists say that it takes up to three weeks to form a new habit, and another three before it takes root.
This means that a fellow can make praying in the morning a routine in just six weeks.
There are three steps you must follow if you want to make praying in the morning a routine. They include:
1. Make a strong resolution: Beginning half-heartedly will make it difficult to commit to anything.
Also, having an accountability partner can help when it comes to developing new habits.
You can ask a friend to encourage you and remind you about your resolution.
2. Never allow exceptions: Do not allow “just this once thinking to creep into your mind. Use every opportunity to practice your new habit.
Whenever the time you set aside in the day comes, start praying immediately; don’t procrastinate.
3. Rely on God: You are in a spiritual battle, and you can only succeed with God’s help.
Therefore, ask for His help and depend on Him to aid you in developing the habit of starting your day with Him.
My dear child, a habit is like a ball of thread: every time you drop it, some of the strands unwind.
Make a conscious effort to start your day with Jesus every day.

OPEN HEAVEN FOR TEENS 8 JANUARY 2024 KEY POINT

Make sure you always start your day with God.

OPEN HEAVEN FOR TEENS 8 JANUARY 2024 HYMN

HYMN 12: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY!
1. Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee:
Holy, holy, holy, Merciful and Mighty!
God in Three Persons,
Blessed, Trinity!
2. Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns
Around the glassy sea:
Cherubim and seraphim Falling down before Thee, Which wert and art,
And evermore shalt be.
3. Holy, Holy, Holy! Though the darkness hide Thee,
Though the eyes of sinful man
Thy glory may not see Only thou art holy:
There is none beside Thee,
Perfect in power, in love, and purity.

OPEN HEAVEN 8 JANUARY 2024 BIBLE READING  Ezekiel 14:6-8

Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.

For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me; I the Lord will answer him by myself:

And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the Lord.

OPEN HEAVEN 8 JANUARY 2024 MESSAGE

Over the past six days, we have been studying some resolutions I made for this year, and I have been encouraging all users of this devotional to adopt them as well.

I have said that in my walk with God this year, I will worship Him, ask for His help, humble myself, give to Him, trust Him and draw close to Him more than ever before.

However, all these would be impossible to achieve if I do not make up my mind to live holy more than ever before.

This year, I am determined never to do anything that will offend God. I will live holy more than ever before!

Amos 3:3 says:
“Can two walk together, except they be agreed?”

Please check how you have been living in the past years, do you think God will be happy to come close to you knowing fully well that His eyes cannot behold iniquity (Habakkuk 1:13)?

If you really want to get close to God, and you want Him to solve all your problems this year, then you must repent of all your sins and forsake them.

Don’t continue to live in sin and expect God’s help.

Shall we continue in sin and expect God’s grace to abound? Apostle Paul’s response to that question was, “God forbid!” (Romans 6:1-2). Grace is God’s help, and it cannot abound upon a sinner.

All your seeds, worship, prayers, and so on that you have decided to do this year will be wasted if you do not live a holy life.

In other words, if you do not want all your efforts to live by these resolutions this year to be fruitless, you must live holy.

God does not hear the prayer of sinners (Psalm 66:18), neither does He accept their sacrifices (Isaiah 59:1-2).

Beloved, for all the resolutions we studied over the past six days to produce the desired result, you must be deliberate about living holy more than ever before this year and beyond.

This year, I will not only love righteousness more, but will also hate iniquity more.

That way, God will anoint me even much more than ever before (Hebrews 1:9).

The Almighty God will grant you all-round success as you make up your mind to live holy and also adopt all the other resolutions we discussed over the past six days, in Jesus’ name.

OPEN HEAVEN 8 JANUARY 2024 ACTION POINT

Determine to live holy more than ever before this year.

OPEN HEAVEN 8 JANUARY 2024 HYMN

RCCG HYMN 23: TAKE MY LIFE AND LET IT BE

1 Take my life and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
let them flow in endless praise,
let them flow in endless praise.

2 Take my hands and let them move
at the impulse of thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
swift and beautiful for thee,
swift and beautiful for thee.

3 Take my voice and let me sing
always, only, for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
filled with messages from thee,
filled with messages from thee.

4 Take my silver and my gold;
not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
every power as thou shalt choose,
every power as thou shalt choose.

5 Take my will and make it thine;
it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart it is thine own;
it shall be thy royal throne,
it shall be thy royal throne.

6 Take my love; my Lord, I pour
at thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be
ever, only, all for thee,
ever, only, all for thee.

DATE: SUNDAY 7TH OF JANUARY, 2024
THEME: THE SIN OF NOT WINNING SOULS

MEMORISE: And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15

BIBLE TEXT: Ezekiel 33:7-9
[7]So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.
[8]When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
[9]Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.

MESSAGE
Anyone who is hungry for righteousness will be filled because Jesus said in John 6:35 that He is the bread of life and whosoever hungers and thirsts for Him shall never be hungry or thirsty.
To hunger for righteousness means to have a longing for God. It also means to seek Him wholeheartedly and want Him more than life. This was what earned David the title ‘A man after God’s heart’ (Acts 13:22). David compared his longing after God to that of a deer that longs for water (Psalm 42:1). Research has shown that the deer sweats a lot, which results in itching. When the deer’s body itches, it becomes desperate to get into the water in order to soothe its hide. At that time, it would take any risk in the jungle just to get into water. This is the kind of desperation for righteousness that God expects from every child of His. He expects us to hunger for righteousness since He is righteousness personified.
My child, rather than long after food or material things, crave righteousness and watch God supply other things to you as promised in His word (Matthew 6:33). Thirst for righteousness and get living water that flows from the throne of God.

KEY POINT
You have a responsibility to preach the gospel.

BIBLE QUIZ
In the book of Genesis, who was the father of Isaac?

HYMN 21 – NEARER, MY GOD TO THEE
1 Nearer, my God to Thee,
Nearer to Thee;
E’en though it be a cross
That raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,(2ce)
Nearer to Thee!

2 Though, like the wanderer,
The sun gone down,
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone,
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,(2ce)
Nearer to Thee

3 There let the way appear
Steps unto heaven;
All that Thou send’st to me
In mercy given,
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to Thee, (2ce)
Nearer to Thee

4 Then with my waking thoughts
Bright with thy praise,
Out of my stony grief
Bethel Ill raise;
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God to thee, (2ce)
Nearer to Thee

5 Or if on joyful wing
Cleaving thy sky.
Sun, moon, and stars forgot,
Upwards I fly
Still all my songs shall be,
Nearer my God to thee, (2ce)
Nearer to Thee!

Singing (Psalms 13:6; 126:1-2),

Clapping of hands (Psalm 47:1),

Musical instruments and dancing (Psalm 150:3-6), etc.

The offering of quality substances like our time, materials, properties, and money are other acceptable means of showing gratitude to God (Proverbs 3:9-10).

We can show gratitude with our labour of love in God’s vineyard (Hebrews 6.10).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1:

Students should mention other ways of showing gratitude to God apart from the aforementioned.

2. BENEFITS OF SHOWING GRATITUDE

Some benefits of showing gratitude to God are stated below:

i. Our gratitude helps us glorify God as we focus on the giver and not the gifts (2 Corinthians 4:15).

ii. It helps us feel God’s presence, His care, and perfect timing (Psalms 95:2; 103:13-14).

iii. It makes us conform to God’s will (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

iv. It brings peace, joy, and contentment (Philippians 4:6-7; 1 Timothy 6:6-8).

v. It perfects our testimony (Luke 17:17-19).

vi. It deepens our faith. Keeping a record of God’s past faithfulness is a faith booster when we face new difficulties (Psalm 103:2).

vii. It aids our prayers (John 11:41-44).

INTRODUCTION

Gratitude is fundamentally about not taking things for granted. Many believe that most things they get are their rights.

They believe in their sweat, smartness, and intellect, hence, they see no reason they should give thanks to anyone, nor even God Almighty.

This is not only wrong but a wicked and dangerous act. To be grateful is to recognise the influence and blessings of the Lord in our lives. Gratitude also means thanksgiving, thankfulness, or appreciation.

OUTLINES:

1. SHOWING GRATITUDE

2. BENEFITS OF SHOWING GRATITUDE

1. SHOWING GRATITUDE

Thanksgiving should be the first fruit of our lips (Hebrews 13:15).

It should come out of a pure, broken, and contrite heart (Psalm 51:16-17).

Thanksgiving should not be offered grudgingly or of necessity but willingly and cheerfully (Psalm 69:30).

Therefore, we can offer thanks to God with joyful noise (Psalm 95:2).

Singing (Psalms 13:6; 126:1-2),

Clapping of hands (Psalm 47:1),

Musical instruments and dancing (Psalm 150:3-6).

OPEN HEAVEN 6 JANUARY 2024 BIBLE READING John 15:4-7

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

OPEN HEAVEN 7 JANUARY 2024 MESSAGE

My sixth resolution is to walk more closely with God than ever before this year.

The Bible says in James 4:8 that if you draw near to God, He will draw near to you.

Our God is not a touch-and-go God; He is a God who wants you to abide in Him (John 15:4-7).

Some of us are Sunday-Sunday Christians; we go to church only on Sundays, and it is only then that we read our Bibles and pray.

The Almighty God wants you to be close to Him, to draw nearer to Him each day.

This year, like never before, I am going to draw close to God and ensure He is by my side daily.

I have discovered from experience that there are problems you can solve with your efforts in a year, two years or even ten years, but if you draw near to God, He can solve them in minutes!

I studied for my PhD at the University of Lagos.

To get a PhD in Mathematics, you must solve a problem nobody has solved before.

Being a problem nobody has solved before, nobody knows whether it has a solution, and they don’t give you a PhD for trying but for solving the problem.

So, I began to work out the details of the problem I chose, and eventually, I ended up with 186 simultaneous equations!

I had been working on the problem for 18 months and didn’t know what to do next.

One night, after struggling with the equations till around 10pm, I decided to go and sleep.

I, however, decided to study the Bible before going to bed, and I studied Exodus 14:21-28 – the crossing of the Red Sea, and God suddenly spoke to me.

He said, “Son, go and bring your mathematics problems.” He began to guide me step by step to put the equations into two different groups – one on the right and the other on the left.

Suddenly, I saw something I had not seen before.

All the equations on the right had something in common, and all the ones on the left had another thing in common.

Then the Lord spoke to me, “Solve the ones on the left together, the ones on the right together, and then bring the two together.”

In five hours, I finished the problem I had been tackling for 18 months!

Whatever problem you might be facing, draw near to God this year, and He will give you a solution, in Jesus’ name.

OPEN HEAVEN 7 JANUARY 2024 KEY POINT

Draw closer to God this year more than ever before, and He will give you solutions to long-standing problems.

OPEN HEAVEN 7 JANUARY 2024 HYMN

RCCG HYMN 10: IN CHRIST ALONE

1 In Christ alone my hope is found,
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My Comforter, my All in All,
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

2 In Christ alone, who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe.
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save:
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied –
For every sin on Him was laid;
Here in the death of Christ I live.

3 There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine –
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

4 No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand:
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.
