OPEN HEAVEN 4 FEBRUARY 2023 MESSAGE

Today, I want you to flash your mind back to when you first got born again. I want you to remember how excited you were about Jesus Christ then. Remember your disposition whenever it was time to go to Church.

Remember how often you read your Bible and prayed. Remember how desperately you wanted to get closer to God. Now look at your life today. Are you as passionate about God as you were in those days? Beloved, remember your first love.

I will never forget the testimony of a sister who didn’t have enough money to come to the Holy Ghost Service and decided to watch it on television only to discover she had no electricity and no fuel to power her generator. She said, “Devil, you are a liar. My God changed water to wine, He will change water to petrol”. She poured a gallon of water into the generator, laid hands on it and said, “Generator, in the mighty name of Jesus, start working”. She turned it on and it worked until the programme ended. That is faith. Is your faith still like that, or do you now rationalise everything?

To get back to your first love, you must once again go back to meditating on His word day and night. You must go back to spending more time with Him than you do with anyone else. You must choose to have Him as the first Person you speak to when you wake in the morning and the last you say goodnight to. You must choose to study your Bible and pray for long hours as you used to. Beloved, remember your first love.

One thing I need to warn you about is that God relates with us based on who we are and not who we were. He said in Ezekiel 18:21-24 that if a person has been doing good and then the fellow decides to become bad, He would forget the days of good and deal with the fellow based on his current disposition and vice versa.

Who are you to God now? The wonderful stories of your closeness to Him in the past do not matter anymore; the issue now is: how close are you to Him today? Beloved, return to your first love.

INTRODUCTION: One of the reasons Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit is to help us learn how to be more godly (Jn.16:12-15). The Holy Spirit will convict us of our sin (Jn.16:8) and guide us in choosing well when faced with temptations, thus producing godly characteristics within us (Eph.3:16; Jn.16:13). This is what the Bible describes as the ‘fruit of the Spirit.’

THE FRUIT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT (PART 1)
To achieve the above-stated objectives, teachers should:
a. Allow the students to read the Bible passage, recite the memory verse, participate in the class activities and do the assignment.

b. Allow the Assistant teacher to conduct the class, mark attendance and assignment, grade performance and close the class session with the closing prayer.

Apostle Paul, while charging the Galatians (and by extension all Christians) to desist from the works of the flesh which brings them under the bondage of the law, admonishes them to be led by the Spirit. He then drew their attention to the results of being filled with the Holy Spirit saying:

A. The Bible uses a lot of agricultural metaphors because they were easily understood by the highly agricultural culture of the time.

B. The “fruit of the Spirit” refers to the “results” we should see in our lives after receiving the Holy Spirit and working on our hearts over time (Rom.8:9; 12:1-2).

C. The Apostle Paul gives us the constituent of the ‘fruit’ as “…..love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self-control…..Gal. 5:21-22.

D. The “fruit” metaphor helps us see our faith as a tree with branches that may or may not produce fruit, depending on how well we take care of the tree itself.
i. If we give the tree nourishment (God’s word) -1 Pet.1:23; 2:2, then it will grow bigger.

ii. If we clear away weeds and insects (sinful tendencies) – Eph.4:22-31; Col.3:8-10, then we keep the tree healthy.

iii. If we consult the ‘professional’ Gardener (God) -1 Chron.16:11 – then we will ensure we are on the right track.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Is it possible for a Spirit-filled Christian not to exhibit some of the constituents of the fruit of the Holy Spirit? If Yes/No, explain.

i. At best, you will experience stagnation-no growth (Jam.2:14-26).

B. Note that Galatians 5:22 starts with the word “But.” The Apostle Paul tells us the opposite of this spiritual fruit.

“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Gal.5:19-21.

This is a list of things that someone who does not have the Holy Spirit’s influence would deal with.

CONCLUSION: On one hand, our sinfulness produces rotted, poisoned fruit, which reflects our sinful nature and hurts us in the end. On the other hand, the Holy Spirit produces beautiful, nourishing fruit that reflects God’s nature and will ultimately benefit our lives.

QUESTIONS:
* Why should a Christian bear the fruit of the Spirit? On one hand, our sinfulness produces rotted, poisoned fruit, which reflects our sinful nature and hurts us in the end. From the memory verse for today, God regards a double-minded person as unstable in all their ways. Being double-minded could also mean that a person is partial and favours some people more than others.

I remember when my son was transferred as a full-time pastor to one of the Northern parishes of The Redeemed Christian Church of God. Some people questioned me and asked that I should transfer him back but I responded that “if other people could be transferred to the North,why can’t my son also serve God there?”

You are expected to apply the standards of God to your daily life and not obey the ones that suit you while you discard the rest. You should also be fair when dealing with others. Similarly, you cannot sin and expect God to overlook it because He is a merciful God. He will discipline you accordingly because He does not have double standards.

OPEN HEAVEN 5 FEBRUARY 2023 BIBLE READING HEBREWS 9:27-28

27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

OPEN HEAVEN 5 FEBRUARY 2023 MESSAGE

Death is a very powerful enemy. It is so powerful that (1 Corinthians 15:26) says that death is the last enemy to be destroyed. That tells you that it is so strong that it would be kept to the very last. One of the reasons death is so powerful and feared by many is because it is a leveller; it levels everyone. The rich, poor, mighty, kings, servants, beggers and everyone else is levelled by death.

Psalm 49:10 says: For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others. Death is no respecter of academic qualifications or achievements when it comes knocking; it listens to no argument. Even Lazarus who Jesus raised after 4 days still died again.

Whether you like it or not, except you are around when Jesus returns to rapture his followers, death will come knocking one day. In both cases however, the result is the same – you will find yourself face to face with God at His judgement seat.

What really makes death so fearsome is that it is permanent. In our Bible reading for today, verse 27 tells us that the moment a person dies, he faces judgement – there are no second chances, no opportunity to try again; it is permanent.

That is why I wonder what people are thinking when they say they want to postpone their salvation or start living holy at a certain time. Many have said that in the past and died before the time they had planned to start living holy. They are in hell today, regretting it now and for eternity.

You must ensure that you are ready for death whenever it comes Knocking. Those who are ready will find themselves in paradise when death comes, but for the rest, they will be weeping and gnashing their teeth for eternity (Luke 13:27-28).

Stop telling lies, stop doctoring figures so as to keep some money for yourself, stop committing fornication, stop sinning! When death comes, all these things will not matter anymore; at that point, all that will matter is if your name is written in the book of life. Surrender your life to Jesus Christ today and commit to following Him to the end. That is the only way to overcome spiritual death and inherit eternal life.

BIBLE PASSAGE: GALATIANS 5:22-23.

MEMORY VERSE: “(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth)” Ephesians 5:9.

INTRODUCTION: One of the reasons Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit is to help us learn how to be more godly (Jn.16:12-15). The Holy Spirit will convict us of our sin (Jn.16:8) and guide us in choosing well when faced with temptations, thus producing godly characteristics within us (Eph.3:16; Jn.16:13). This is what the Bible describes as the ‘fruit of the Spirit.’

1. WHY “FRUIT?”
The Bible uses a lot of agricultural metaphors because they were easily understood by the highly agricultural culture of the time. The “fruit of the Spirit” refers to the “results” we should see in our lives after receiving the Holy Spirit and working on our hearts over time (Rom.8:9; 12:1-2). The Apostle Paul gives us the components of the ‘fruit’ as “…..love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self-control….. Gal.5:21-22.

The “fruit” metaphor helps us see our faith as a tree with branches that may or may not produce fruit, depending on how well we take care of the tree itself. If we give the tree nourishment (God’s word)-1Pet.1:23; 2:2, then it will grow bigger. If we clear away weeds and insects (sinful tendencies) -Eph.4:22-31; Col.3:8-10, then we keep the tree healthy. If we consult the ‘professional’ Gardener (God) – 1Chron. 16:11- then we will ensure we are on the right track.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Is it possible for a Spirit-filled Christian not to exhibit some of the constituents of the fruit of the Holy Spirit? If Yes/No, explain.

2. THE OPPOSITE OF BEARING FRUIT
If you are a Christian, and you are not exhibiting the fruit of the Spirit in your life, at best, you will experience stagnation-no growth (Jam.2:14-26). At worst, the result of “bad fruit” is death (Rom.6:20-23; Prov.14:12). Notice that Galatians 5:22 starts with the word “But.” The Apostle Paul tells us the opposite of these spiritual fruit. Let us take a look at the verses just before the fruit list: “Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” – Gal.5:19-21. This is a list of things that someone who does not have the Holy Spirit’s influence would have problems with.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Is a Christian who is still manifesting the works of the flesh really saved?

CONCLUSION: On one hand, our sinfulness produces rotted, poisoned fruit, which reflects our sinful nature and hurts us in the end. On the other hand, the Holy Spirit produces beautiful, nourishing fruit that reflects God’s nature and will ultimately benefit our lives.

* Why should a Christian bear the fruit of the Spirit? On one hand, our sinfulness produces rotted, poisoned fruit, which reflects our sinful nature and hurts us in the end. I decree and declare that every force that fights me loses because I love God and I am on His side and everything that attempts fighting Him is bound to lose.
