INTRODUCTION : In Luke 10:2, It is the desire of our Lord Jesus for the Church to grow because the harvest is great but many obstacles and factors are preventing this promise from coming to past. We need to stand against these obstacles in our prayers.

Fasting refers to willingly abstaining from a particular thing (usually food) for a reason for some time.

Generally fasting is not only a spiritual activity. People fast for different reasons. It could be for health reasons, personal development, weight loss, etc.

The purpose for your fast determines how you fast.

For Christians, fasting is a period of consecration where you intentionally deny yourself of the gratification you get from food or any other thing and focus on seeking the face of God.

In the bible, the concept of fasting originated in the Old Testament.

The first mention of someone fasting from food is in Exodus 34:28 where Moses was on the mountain with God for forty days and went without food and water.

Fasting is biblical and holds numerous benefits for everyone especially the beliver.

But we want to charge you to stay committed to fasting especially in this first months of the year.

It is important to start the year strongly especially from your spiritual life. Do not be relaxed or cold spiritually especially not now.

Fasting holds numerous benefits for everyone especially for the believer.

The benefits of fasting

1. Spirit rules and flesh decreases.

Whatever you feed grows. When you feed your flesh, it gets more strengthened and grows and will rule you. Man is spirit, that has a mind, and lives in a body.

God does not expect you to be ruled by your body because it is only a vessel. It is His design that you are ruled by the spirit.

When you fast, you starve your flesh and feed your spirit man through prayers and Bible study. Your spirit grows and has dominion over your flesh.

2. It Minimizes Distractions.

The flashy and enticing things of this world are very distracting and many times, we can’t let go of them because they seem too good and important.

Unfortunately when we hold on to these things, we let go of more important things (things of eternal value like our relationship with God and our time with Him).

When we get lost in the noise of th world, our spirit man is weakened and flesh is excited, and wellfed. Fasting helps you block out the noise and focus on the things that actually matter.

3. It Heightens Discernment

Fasting helps eradicate obscurity and confusion from your life. The distractions in the world obstruct your accurate connectivity to God so you are unable to precisely discern the will of God.

These distractions are like disturbing waves that you hear when a radio is not properly tuned to the right station. Discernment becomes difficult and mechanical.

Fasting helps you break off these disturbances. It quiets your spirit and makes you hear what God is saying per time.

4. Stops Idolatory

Worship of idols is not restricted to bowing before physical images alone.

In our world today, many things have become idols for people. People eat unhealthy amounts of food or become obsessed with it to the point where their belly becomes their god.

Others are addicted to their phones and prioritize it over their Bibles and prayers.

Baal and Dagon as we see in the bible days may not be the gods people are serving in our time but there are a host of other gods.

Anything that controls you has become your idol. It can be your TV, junk food, fashion, accessories, clothes, etc. Fasting helps you get rid yourself of these idols and focus on God.

5. Consecration.

Our life can get busy for legitimate reasons and we are unable to dedicate special times of devotion and consecration to God.

Declaring fast is an avenue for you to consecrate yourself and open up your heart to receive from God.

6. It Helps Your Health

Apart from the spiritual benefits of fasting, there are also health benefits.

Everytime you fast from food, you give your body and organs some time away From being stuffed with food.

Your body rests and has time to recharge. Your skin also benefits from it.

And for many people, their concentration is better once they have overcome the initial stage of struggling with the fast. You will also feel lighter and lose unhealthy weight.

7 ANSWERED PRAYERS

Fasting makes prayers more efficacious. Jesus Christ taught that certain challenges can not be surmounted without fasting and prayers.

When you fast, you have access to a greater range of possibilities and answered prayers.

These benefits of fasting should encourage you to continue fasting regardless of how challenging it is.

Remember, you do not have to fast from food or for extended periods if you are pregnant or have a health challenge.

OPEN HEAVEN 18 JANUARY 2023 MESSAGE

In our Bible text for today, we read about the widow of Zarephath who had only one meal left. She and her son were going to eat and die. She sacrificed that one meal and she and her son lived on. In Psalm 50:14-15, the Bible says if you offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and pay your vows, God will deliver you in the day of trouble.

In 2 Samuel 24:11-25, seventy thousand men had died from a pestilence that arose in Israel due to David conducting a census that displeased God. This was a big disaster and something had to be done immediately to stop it. They had prayed and, although God had stopped the angel that was spreading the plague, He did not recall him; the angel remained at the threshing place of Araunah the Jebusite.

This still meant trouble, so David’s seer – Gad decided that they should apply a principle to avert the disaster. And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite. 2 Samuel 24:18.

When David wanted to make the sacrifice, Araunah tried to give everything needed to him for free, but he refused. He insisted that he had to bear the cost. He gave the sacrifice and the disaster was immediately averted. And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel. 2 Samuel 24:25 The funny thing is that many non-Christians know this principle: that, in the face of impending doom or disaster, a really big sacrificial offering can avert it (2 Kings 3:26-27).

We as the children of the living God should follow David’s example and be ready to give a sacrificial offering, especially in troubled times. May God help us – the true children of God to apply this principle.

The sacrifice that pleases God the most is your life. You become a living sacrifice the day you surrender your life to Jesus. From the day you genuinely surrender your life to Him, He can send you wherever He wants, set the direction of your life and use you to fulfil His plans.

God knows, I never wanted to be a Pastor, talk less of a General Overseer, but I am a living sacrifice. I had wanted to retire at the age of seventy, so that I could then begin to live a normal life-sleep when others sleep, eat when others eat and so on, but God said, “No”. Since I am a living sacrifice, my response was, “Yes, Daddy”.

God expects your entire life to be a sacrifice to Him; you are to go wherever He sends you. When He says witness-you witness, sit-you sit, pray-you pray. The moment God knows that He has you as a living sacrifice, whatever other offering you give becomes acceptable because it would be given under His guidance.

Some of us, even before coming to Church, have made up our minds on the offering to give. For the fellow who is a living sacrifice, God will tell them what to give. When I became General Overseer, things were hard.

We could hardly pay the staff on the church’s payroll and many a time, there would be nothing left to pay the General Overseer. Having left paid employment for full- time ministry after working for the government for several years, I received my gratuity, with plans to save some, invest some in shares and so on.

However, since I am a living sacrifice, I asked God, “What do I do with this money?” He responded that I should divide it into three parts and give each to a different ministry while retaining nothing for myself. As painful as this was, I was comforted when He said further, “I will be your source”.

When you become a living sacrifice, God will become your source. The day you became a living sacrifice, you became His property, so He will take care of you. Things may be hard at first, but He will make sure that your tomorrow will be all right (Colossians 1:27).

God created us so that we can constantly have fellowship with Him. However, the state of the heart of anyone who wants to be in constant fellowship with God matters.

In our passage for today, when God asked Adam where he was, He wasn’t keen on his location because He knew Adam would be nowhere else but the Garden. Besides, He could see him; He sees everything. So, God was asking Adam where his heart and loyalty were. I ask you too, where are you?

If you have sinned or wandered away, you can go back to God today. There is no safety outside Him. Don’t be like Adam, who took a stroll away from God, and the devil took advantage of that. He and his wife eventually got banished from the Garden. Be in a place where God can access you at all times.

The Bible passage for today says your body is the temple of God. This means you should be careful about what goes into the temple and what you wear on it. The elders have a saying, “if children of the same mother enter a room to talk and come out smiling, they have not told each other the truth.” So, I will speak frankly with you today because I love you.

A lot of young people have missed it, and some have even lost their lives in the name of fashion. Why would your hair look like that of a madman or be braided to your knee? Why allow someone to put a tattoo on your skin? Why wear a dress exposing your nakedness, or a jean trouser torn on the knee? These are worldly fashions that disqualify many people in the sight of God.

Dear child, embrace the natural beauty that God endowed you with. Set a standard wherever you find yourself. Let your dressing glorify God and not the devil.
