OPEN HEAVEN FOR TEENS 14 JANUARY 2023 MESSAGE

A time waster is any activity you engage in that does not glorify God or hinders you from growth. Any social event encroaching on your Bible study schedule is a time waster. A person can also be a time waster.

Thus, anyone who hinders you from doing productive activities or doing the will of God is a time waster. For example, friends who visit during reading or church time are time wasters.

Friends who engage you in gossip when you should be busy with your assignments are time wasters also. Proverbs 12:11 says:”He that tilleth his hand shall be satisfied with bread: but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding”*

The Bible says: to everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Don’t waste your time on frivolities. Time wasted can never be gotten back. Set your priorities right so that you can achieve your goals.

FORTH IN YOUR NAME

1. Forth in your name, O Lord, I go,
My daily labor to pursue,
You only, Lord, resolved to know
In all I think or speak or do.

2. The task your wisdom has assigned
Here let me cheerfully fulfill;
In all my work your presence find,
And prove your good and perfect will.

3. You may I set at my right hand,
Whose eyes my inmost secrets view,
And labor on at your command
And offer all my work to you.

4. Help me to bear your easy yoke
In ev’ry moment watch and pray,
And still to things eternal look
And hasten to that glorious day.

5. Then with delight may I employ
All that your bounteous grace has given,
And run my earthly course with joy,
And closely walk with you in heaven.

OPEN HEAVEN 14 JANUARY 2023 BIBLE READING ROMANS 9:15-26

15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.

18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.

19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?

20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?

21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:

23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,

24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?

25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.

26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.

OPEN HEAVEN 14 JANUARY 2023 MESSAGE

Some people think that God is doing great things for them because they deserve it. They think because of all that they do for God, then it is only expected that He would bless them as He does. Believe me honestly, everything that God does, He does for His name’s sake – not for you, but that His name will be glorified (Psalm 106:7-8).

Don’t become arrogant, God could use anyone else. There are people who pray, study the Bible and are even more talented than you, but God chose you; you should be grateful for that. In any case, if we were to count iniquity, who will stand? (Psalm 130:3).

When people see the things God is doing in The Redeemed Christian Church of God, they think I must be special. The only thing special about me is that God chose me, because even from as far back as when I was a little child, God had promised my Father-in-the Lord that The Redeemed Christian Church of God would go round the world.

It had nothing to do with me at all; God just decided to glorify Himself through this Church and it is only by grace that He chose me to be the General Overseer. He could have chosen anyone else. There are people far more qualified than I, but it is by grace that I was chosen.

When you see people still drowning in sin, don’t judge them because you are on your way to heaven; rather, pray that God will save them by His grace. It is by His grace that you are not the one on the way to hell. Never forget that it is He who is working something out for His name’s sake. You are only graced to be a recipient of God’s blessings.

The people of Israel may have thought that God parted the Red Sea and drowned Pharaoh and his army because they were so special. He did it for His name’s sake. They were only graced to be the ones He did it for.

Romans 9:17 testifies to this For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.

OPEN HEAVEN 14 JANUARY 2023 PRAYER POINT

Father, thank You for Your grace over my life. Please don’t let me ever stop enjoying help from Your throne of grace.

OPEN HEAVEN 14 JANUARY 2023 HYMN

AMAZING GRACE

1 Amazing grace (how sweet the sound)
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.

2 ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!

3 Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come:
’tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.

4 The Lord has promised good to me,
his word my hope secures;
he will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.

5 Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
and mortal life shall cease:
I shall possess, within the veil,
a life of joy and peace.

6 The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
the sun forbear to shine;
but God, who called me here below,
will be forever mine.

BIBLE PASSAGE: ROMANS 13:7-8.

[7]Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

[8]Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

MEMORY VERSE:
“Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king” 1 Peter 2:17.

INTRODUCTION: In our previous lesson, we learnt about why and how we should honour
God. We also learnt the meaning of honour which is to bestow value upon someone or highly esteem another.

OUTLINES:
1. WHO DESERVES HONOUR?
2. HOW CAN WE ATTAIN TRUE HONOUR?

1. WHO DESERVES HONOUR?
The idea of honouring people is biblical and can be showcased in many of our basic relationships. Here are some of them:

1. Citizen-Authority relationships. We are to honour especially those in authority through obedience and demonstration of respect, irrespective of their age or qualification. This comes from the fact that they represent God’s ultimate authority (Rom.13:1-2).

2. Laity-Clergy relationships. The Bible speaks of the leadership of the church as deserving ‘double honour’ (1Tim.5:17).

3. Employee-Employer relationships. We are equally commanded to honour one another in our employer-employee relationships (Eph.6:5-9).

4. Husband-Wife relationships. In a marriage relationship, the husband is expected to love and show appreciation to his wife while she reciprocates with reverence (Eph. 5:33).

5. Children-Parents relationships. The command to honour our parents comes with a promise (Ex.20:12). To do otherwise is to attract untimely death (Matt.15:4).
On the whole, the Bible admonishes us to honour all men (1Pet.2:17).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Should the wicked/ungodly leaders be honoured?

2. HOW CAN WE ATTAIN TRUE HONOUR?
The Bible teaches that true honour is found in God (Deut.26:19). Anyone who wishes to attain true honour must, first of all, have a cordial relationship with God (Ps.91:14-15). Therefore to attain honour, we must be righteous (Prov.21:21); humble (Prov.22:4; Prov.15:33); wise and intelligent (Prov.4:7-8); hardworking and diligent (Prov.22:29); faithful and maintain integrity (Ps.41:12; Prov.20:7), among others.

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should discuss whether wealth or riches should be a criterion for honour.

CONCLUSION: If we honour those promoted by God, He will honour us too. Do not look down on anyone.

QUESTIONS:
* Mention five (5) categories of people who deserve to be honoured? If we honour those promoted by God, He will honour us too. Do not look down on anyone.
* How can we attain true honour?

ASSIGNMENT: Students should mention 10 consequences of dishonouring people (1×10=10 Marks).

8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

11 Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

13 But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

INTRODUCTION: Simply put, choice is the act of picking between two or more possibilities. The power of choice is the strong will to make a decision in the mist of several options. While it is generally opined that man is a choice being, scriptures clearly established that God has given man the power to choose (Joshua 24:15). However, we live with the consequences of the choices we make whether good or bad. The onus therefore, lies on us to make the right choices which is in turn determine the course of our lives.

LESSON OUTLINES
1. COMMON CHOICES AND CONSEQUENCES
2. FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE CHOICES

1. COMMON CHOICES AND CONSEQUENCES
There are several choices we make in life with their attendance consequences. For instance, the choices we make about food and exercise influence our physical health (Proverbs 25:16). The choices we make about our academic pursuits often affect our career and occupations. The choices we make in reaction to life’s adversities affect our psychological well-being (Proverbs 24:10). Other major choices we make in life include:

1. The choice of where to live/settle may determine the peace or discomfort, blessing or trouble we will have (Genesis 13:8-11; 19:13; 26:1-2, 12-13)

2. The choice of who we marry will determine the bliss we enjoy or the blows we endure (Proverbs 18:22; 31:28; Proverbs 21:19; 1Kings 11:4).

3. The choice of the friends we keep will determine how far we’ll go and the quality of life we live (Proverbs 13:20; 18:24; 2Samuel 13:5; 10:14, 28-29)

4. The choices we make to be different will determine whether or not we will stand out from the crowd (Daniel 1:8,19; Hebrews 11:24-26).
5. The choice we make whether to serve God or not will determine the eternal reward we will get (Joshua 24:15; Revelation 22:11-12).

FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE CHOICES

Self-control will help guide our choices and prevent us from making a rational decisions (James 1:19; 1 Samuel 25:10). We must make good plans and be guided by good vision before we make a choice (Ruth 3:1-4; Proverbs 16:3,9). More importantly, prayers will enable us to key into the mind of God (1Samuel 30:7-8; Psalm 37:5,2

Conversely, pride, hypocrisy, doubt, and negative thoughts among others, will hinder us from making the right choices (Proverbs 11:2; Psalm 10:4; Isaiah 32:6; James 1:8). We must strive to always have the correct mind frame all the time (Proverbs 4:23).

CONCLUSION: If we have made the wrong choice in the past, it is time to forgive ourselves and move on with life as we make necessary corrections to avoid any repetition of such.

OPEN HEAVEN 13 JANUARY 2023 MEMORIZE: But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. James 4:6

OPEN HEAVEN 13 JANUARY 2023 BIBLE READING PROVERBS 16:5

Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.

OPEN HEAVEN 13 JANUARY 2023 MESSAGE

More often than not, the people who provoke God do so through pride. The most junior staff in an organisation would typically be humble and submissive. However, the day the person begins to feel overly important, he or she will start provoking some people. The moment you become proud, you begin to provoke God. Never forget that no matter how high you go, God is still the Most High.

God usually deals with proud people in two ways. The first way is by recalling such a person suddenly and in a disgraceful manner. In Acts 12:20-24, king Herod’s pride made him consent to being compared to the Most High.

This made God order worms to eat him up alive. The Lord said, “Oh, you think you are big because you are the Commander-in-Chief of some armies? I have armies that don’t carry guns – ordinary worms”. One moment Herod was sitting on the throne, the next moment, he was being eaten by worms.

However, the Lord could also decide to disgrace the fellow openly while preserving his or her life. That is what He did to Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4:28-37. Nebuchadnezzar was the greatest king of his time. He built a city called Babylon, which had one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

At a point, God saw that he was becoming proud and sent him a warning through a dream. Unfortunately, one year after the message came, he had forgotten it, so God said, “Okay, you think you are big? Go and eat with animals for seven years”. Nobody removed his royal robes from him; he removed them with his own hands.

If there is something that must leave your life permanently today, it is pride. Be careful as you rise, so as not to begin to feel like you are overly important. The elders say that when the cockroach falls, nobody hears the sound; when an ant falls, the ground doesn’t tremble, but if an elephant falls, the tremors would be felt both near and far.

If God is elevating you, be weary of pride so that it doesn’t become a case of Him raising up an elephant so that when it falls everyone would pay attention, like in the case of Pharaoh (Romans 9:17).

OPEN HEAVEN 13 JANUARY 2023 KEY POINT

If there is something that must leave your life permanently today, it is pride.

OPEN HEAVEN 13 JANUARY 2023 HYMN

I AM THINE O LORD

1. I am Thine, O Lord
I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.

REFRAIN:
Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

2. Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord
By the power of grace divine
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.

3. Oh, the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
I commune as friend with friend!

4. There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.
