OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 6 SEPTEMBER 2024 FRIDAY: SHINE FORTH

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 6 SEPTEMBER 2024 MEMORISE: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Matthew 5:14

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 6 SEPTEMBER 2024 READ: Matthew 5:14-16

[14]Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

[15]Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

[16]Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 6 SEPTEMBER 2024 MESSAGE:

To shine forth means to radiate, glow, and make one’s light visible to others.

In this dark world, we are to shine forth by bringing hope and joy to those around us.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 5:16 As a child of God, it is your good deeds and actions that will draw others to Christ.

Thus, you must live like Christ so that you will become a model for others.

This will give you the boldness to preach the gospel like Stephen in Acts 6:8-15 and Acts 7.

He was full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom. Even at the point of death, he shone and shared the message of Christ with those around him.

Until everyone in your neighborhood, classroom, school, family, and church attest to your good deeds, you are not shining.

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 6 SEPTEMBER 2024 KEY POINT

When you behave well and perform good deeds, you shine, but when you behave badly, you dim your light.

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 6 SEPTEMBER 2024 BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Song 1:1-4:16; 2 Corinthians 8:16-24

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 6 SEPTEMBER 2024 HYMN 21

STANDING ON THE PROMISES OF CHRIST MY KING

1. Standing on the promises of Christ, my King,
Through eternal ages let his praises ring;
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

Refrain:
Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God, my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.

2. Standing on the promises that cannot fail.
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God. [Refrain]

3. Standing on the promises of Christ, the Lord,
Bound to him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God. [Refrain]

4. Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
List’ning ev’ry moment to the Spirit’s call,
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God. [Refrain

BIBLE PASSAGE: Isaiah 47:13-14 NKJV
[13] You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels; Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, And the monthly prognosticators Stand up and save you From what shall come upon you.
[14] Behold, they shall be as stubble, The fire shall burn them; They shall not deliver themselves From the power of the flame; It shall not be a coal to be warmed by, Nor a fire to sit before!

MEMORY VERSE: “Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.” Leviticus 19:31 (NKJV).

INTRODUCTION: Alternative spirituality is a loosely defined term generally used to describe spiritual practices that do not conform to true Christianity. It is largely characterised by some spiritual practices and rituals that are often chosen by the participants to fit their individual needs. In this lesson, we shall highlight some of them and scripturally view what our perspectives should be as believers.

OUTLINES:
1. Alternative Spirituality Practices
2. Scriptural Perspectives

1. ALTERNATIVE SPIRITUALITY PRACTICES
Astrology and the Zodiac is the “interpretation” of an assumed influence the starry hosts (and planets) exert on human destiny (Isaiah 47:13; Daniel 2:27). According to astrology, the sign you were born under, like Aquarius, Pisces, etc. impacts your destiny. Crystal sphere is the belief that a precious stone has an inherent power that can be used to man’s benefit like attracting wealth, rekindling romance, and warding off evil spirits or bad energy thus bringing good luck. Necromancy is the conjuring of the spirits of the dead to magically reveal the future or influence the course of events. In the Bible, necromancy is also called “divination,” “sorcery” and “spiritism” (Exodus 7:11; 2 Kings 17:17).
Others include practices like palm reading, spiritual bathing, playing some seemingly harmless games designed to initiate people into divination, visiting websites that promise to guide and reveal destiny to unsuspecting victims, perfumes and cosmetics capable of bringing good luck or warding off bad luck, visiting false Prophets, using charms, amulets, or talismans, etc. (Leviticus 19:26).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should mention other ungodly practices prevalent in their community.

2. SCRIPTURAL PERSPECTIVES
Astrology, crystal sphere as well as necromancy are forms of divination expressly detestable and forbidden in Scriptures (Deuteronomy 18:10-14). Stars, along with the sun and moon, were given for “signs” and “seasons” (Genesis 1:14). To “worship the starry host” is a clear violation of God’s law (Deuteronomy 4:19). The royal astrologers of the Babylonian court were put to shame by God’s prophet, Daniel (Daniel 1:20; 2:27).
Our wisdom comes from God, not the dead (James 1:5). Also those who are dead, either go to Heaven to rest or to hell for condemnation. Anything outside this is the conjuring of demonic spirits. Likewise, anything that seeks to manipulate the spirit world can be categorised as witchcraft. Witchcraft is named along with idolatry as ungodly behaviour (Galatians 5:19-21). All the aforementioned practices involve demonic manipulations and open the one who practices them to demonic attacks. It is worshipping created things rather than the Creator (Romans 1:25).
The word of God is and must remain our guide through life (Psalm 119:105).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should share any alternative spirituality they have engaged in previously and its implication on their lives.

CONCLUSION Every spirituality outside the will of Christ is false and demonic. It should not be embraced by true Christians.

QUESTIONS
* Mention three reasons believers should avoid any spirituality outside Christ.
*.Give two examples of alternative spiritual practices that people get involved in.

OPEN HEAVEN 6 SEPTEMBER 2024 HYMN 22

SWEET HOUR OF PRAYER

1. Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare,
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

2. Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
The joys I feel, the bliss I share,
Of those whose anxious spirits burn
With strong desires for thy return!
With such I hasten to the place
Where God my Savior shows His face,
And gladly take my station there,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

3. Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
Thy wings shall my petition bear
To Him whose truth and faithfulness
Engage the waiting soul to bless.
And since He bids me seek His face,
Believe His Word and trust His grace,
I’ll cast on Him my every care,
And wait for thee, sweet hour of prayer!

4. Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
May I thy consolation share,
Till, from Mount Pisgah’s lofty height,
I view my home and take my flight.
This robe of flesh I’ll drop, and rise
To seize the everlasting prize,
And shout, while passing through the air,
“Farewell, farewell, sweet hour of prayer!”

BIBLE PASSAGE: John 1:1-5,14
[1]In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
[2]The same was in the beginning with God.
[3]All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
[4]In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
[5]And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
[14]And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

MEMORY VERSE: “And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.” 1 John 5:20.

INTRODUCTION: Generally, a ‘deity’ is a ‘god or goddess’ in a polytheistic religion (belief in many gods). Also, a being of divine status, quality, or nature is referred to as a deity. In the context of the Christian faith, the Deity is the Creator and Supreme Being. The argument about the Deity of Jesus Christ is common among people of other major religions (although they teach that Jesus was a prophet, a good teacher or a godly man). However, the Bible tells us that Jesus was infinitely more than the three combined (Matthew 16:13-16). Jesus is God. He is Divine.

OUTLINES:
1. THE DIVINITY OF JESUS CHRIST
2. REASONS THAT JESUS IS GOD

1. THE DIVINITY OF JESUS CHRIST
Here are some of the biblical evidences that Jesus is God:
1. Jesus is a member of the Godhead (Genesis 1:26a) referred to as the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit). The Bible clearly states that the Godhead resides in Jesus Christ bodily (Colossians 2:6-9). God the Father refers to Jesus as God (Hebrews 1:8).
2. Old Testament prophecies of Christ announce His deity as the mighty God (Isaiah 9:6).
3. Jesus says in John 10:30 “I and My Father are one” and “before Abraham was, I AM” (John 8:58). Jesus, announcing His identity as “I AM” is a direct application of the Old Testament name for God (Exodus 3:14). Jesus receives worship several times in the Scripture (Matthew 2:11; 28:9; Luke 24:52). He never rebukes people for worshipping Him.
4. The apostles, through divine inspiration testify that Jesus is God. For instance, John 1:1 says “…the Word was God.” John 1:14 says “And the Word became flesh…” This indicates that Jesus is God in the flesh. Thomas the disciple in John 20:28 declares to Jesus, “My Lord and my God” Jesus did not correct him. Apostle Paul describes Him as, “…the great God and our Saviour, Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13). Apostle Peter says the same, “…of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 1:1).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Share with the class any encounter with non-believers who reject the fact that Jesus is God.

2. REASONS THAT JESUS IS GOD
The provision of salvation only works if Jesus is God, hence the divinity of Jesus is the why He is the only way of salvation (Acts 4:12; John 14:6). Jesus is God incarnate, the eternal Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8; 22:13). Jesus has the right to forgive sins. This is something only God can do (Acts 5:31; Luke 5:20-24). Jesus will “judge the living and the dead,” (2 Timothy 4:1) and reward all deeds in the flesh (Revelation 22:11-12).
Some titles that uniquely belong to Jehovah (the formal name of God) in the Old Testament are used for Jesus. For instance, “Redeemer” (Psalms 19:14; 78:35) is used for Jesus in the New Testament (Titus 2:13-14; Revelation 5:9). Jesus is called Emmanuel-“God with us” (Matthew 1:23).
Some actions that can be accomplished only by God are credited to Jesus. For instance, He created and sustains the universe (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16-17). He possesses attributes that only a deity can have: Eternality (John 8:58), Omnipresence (Matthew 18:20, 28:20), Omniscience (Matthew 16:21), and Omnipotence (Luke 7:13-15).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should distinguish between the biblical explanation of Christ being God (John 1:1-5, 14) and the opinion of people of other religions.

CONCLUSION: Christians should not only believe in the deity of Jesus but must be bold to proclaim and defend it scripturally.

QUESTIONS
* Give four biblical pieces of evidence that Jesus is God.
* Explain three reasons Jesus is God.

ASSIGNMENT: Write out five things Jesus did in your life that no man can do. (2×5=10 Marks).

[26]That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

[27]That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 5 SEPTEMBER 2024 MESSAGE

Sanctification is the process of becoming more like Jesus Christ in thoughts, words, and actions.

It also refers to being set apart for God’s use. Sanctification is in stages; the first stage occurs at the point of salvation when a sinner surrenders his or her totality to Jesus Christ. Today’s memory verse explains this.

The second stage occurs when the new believer studies and meditates on the word of God.

He or she becomes sanctified by the word according to John 17:17, which says: “Sanctify them by your truth; your word is truth.”

It is this level of sanctification that brings about transformation.

It starts from the heart, and as one grows through the word, it is reflected in actions (Romans 12:2).

This growth is what makes it possible for a chronic liar to become an honest fellow.

Thus, the process of sanctification is not a one-off event; it is a lifelong journey.

The final stage of sanctification will occur when we shed our terrestrial bodies, which can still accommodate sin, and put on celestial bodies like Jesus’ after His resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:51-53). How glorious will that be?

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 4 SEPTEMBER 2024 MESSAGE

The goodness of God can be seen in all His creation. Today’s Bible reading and memory verse clearly show that God is good.

God created everything from the beginning and saw that it was good. He first created light and saw that it was good.

Then, to seal the depth of His goodness, He separated the light from the darkness.

Now, we have what we call day and night (Genesis 1:1-5).

God kept creating until day six, when He created man and saw that everything was good.

Another evidence of God’s goodness is that the ground hasn’t opened up to swallow any of us, nor has the sky collapsed over our heads.

The trees have not rebelled against the order of their creation to fight mankind.

Science might put forth reasons for the order of all things, but the fact is that it is God’s goodness that has kept everything on this earth throughout all the ages.

Beloved, even if you think you do not have reasons to thank and praise God, you should thank Him for everything He created.

OPEN HEAVEN 5 SEPTEMBER 2024 MEMORISE: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: Colossians 1:16

OPEN HEAVEN 5 SEPTEMBER 2024 READ: Ephesians 2:1-10:

And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Not of works, lest any man should boast.10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

OPEN HEAVEN 5 SEPTEMBER 2024 MESSAGE

No matter how long you spend on earth, you will never see a tree that eats its own fruit. Trees are planted by human beings for their pleasure, not for the pleasure of the trees.

In the same way, God made you for His own pleasure. You were not made to satisfy yourself, you were made to satisfy Him.

Therefore, when people live their lives just to give themselves pleasure, they are malfunctioning.

Having lots of money, driving good cars and owning houses does not mean that someone has fulfilled his or her destiny because all those things are for the fellow’s pleasure.

Destiny is not measured by how much money you have or how powerful you become; it is measured by the degree to which you are doing the will of God for your life.

For example, someone might have seen Joseph as the Prime Minister of Egypt and said, “This guy has made it! He is fulfilling destiny because of the exalted position that he has attained,” but if Joseph did not save his family from the famine as God had created him to do (Genesis 45:1-11), he would have been a failure.

There will be many rich people who will finish their races here on earth, and rather than them being told, “Well done thou good and faithful servant,” they will hear, “Thou wicked and slothful servant.” I pray this will not be your portion, in Jesus’ name.

Beloved, it is good to be rich, famous, and powerful, but even when those things come, you will still not be fulfilled unless you do the will of God.

Don’t chase shadows; chase God’s calling for your life. It seemed foolish when I left lecturing to pastor a small church.

However, because that was the will of God for my life, it was the best decision l ever made. In fulfilling His will, God gave me all that I could ever ask for and more.

A tree that bears fruits for its owner to eat will be taken care of. The owner will give it all the nutrients and care that it needs to flourish.

When you pursue God’s will for your life, He will ensure that you never lack any good thing. Ask Him what His purpose for your life is and pursue it.

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 3 SEPTEMBER 2024 READ: Matthew 2:1-16

[1]Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

[2]Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

[3]When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

[4]And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

[5]And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

[6]And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

[7]Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

[8]And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

[9]When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

[10]When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

[11]And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

[12]And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

[13]And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

[14]When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:

[15]And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

[16]Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 3 SEPTEMBER 2024 MESSAGE

King Herold ruled over the Jews during the time of Jesus’ birth. While he appeared to be a successful leader, the truth about him was far from admirable.

King Herod was disturbed by the news of a new king being born and felt threatened by this potential rival to his throne.

He asked the wise men (magi) to find the baby and report to him so he could pay homage.

However, he had darker plans in his mind. He was willing to do whatever it took to remain king, even if it meant taking the lives of innocent children.

He eventually killed all the children in his kingdom who were aged two years and under in the hope that he would eliminate the threat to his throne.

King Herod’s story is a reminder of the dangers of seeking power and control at all costs.

It is a warning to all of us not to become consumed by ambition, greed, or the desire for power.

Instead, we should live a life that reflects God’s character, which is guided by love, kindness, and compassion for others.

I pray that just as Herod failed in his attempt to kill Jesus, those who are after your destiny will fail woefully, in Jesus’ name.
