OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 20 MAY 2024

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 20 MAY 2024 MONDAY: ARE YOU BOLD?

MEMORISE: For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. Acts 4:20

READ: Acts 4:19-21
[19]But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.
[20]For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
[21]So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.

MESSAGE
It will interest you to know that despite the fact that many Christians speak in tongues, they still lack the boldness to confront evil. Boldness has the capacity to express the power of God to dispel darkness and bring about a miracle through you.
I remember when we started some building construction in Redemption City in the early ’90s, there was a particular huge tree that stood in the middle of our land. The villagers we acquired the land from warned the surveyors never to cut it down because it was the meeting point for some witches. I was not around, but I was told that three of our youths (who have now become elders) got wind of the information and decided to dare the devil. They took their cutlasses and saws, marched to the tree’s location, and cut it down while praying.
There is power in you, and you must not allow compromise or lukewarmness to water it down. You have the advantage of the Holy Spirit to be bold. Speak against evil in your environment. However, you must make sure that you’re not involved in any evil as well.

KEY POINT
I am bold and courageous! I will never be silenced by the devil, in Jesus’ name.

HYMN 15 – CONQUERORS AND OVERCOMES NOW ARE WE
1 Conquerors and overcomes now are we,
Thro’ the precious blood of Christ we’ve victory
If the Lord be for us, we can never fail,
Nothing ‘gainst His mighty pow’r can e’er prevail.

CHORUS
Conquerors are we, through the blood of Jesus,
God will give us victory, through the blood of Jesus
Thro’ the Lamb for sinners slain,
Yet who lives and reigns again,
More than conquerors are we,
More than conquerors are we.

2. In the name of Israel’s God we’ll onward press,
Overcoming sin and all unrighteousness;
Not to us, but unto Him the praise shall be,
For Salvation and for blood bought victory.

3 Unto him that overcometh shall be given,
Here to eat of hidden manna sent from heav’n,
Over yonder he the victors palm shall bear,
And a robe of white, and golden crown shall wear.

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 19 MAY 2024 MESSAGE

As teenagers reach puberty, their hormones start working in full gear and their hygiene requirements change.

It is essential that you are taught good hygiene to avoid potential medical problems and social exclusion that may result from poor hygiene.

I will highlight the basics of good hygiene below:
– Bathe twice a day, ideally in the morning and immediately after you get back from an outing or before going to bed. Use a mild soap and concentrate on washing your face, hands, feet, underarms, and pubic area.

– Use deodorant after bathing to keep your armpit fresh because, at puberty, your sweat glands become more active, and the chemical composition of the sweat changes, causing it to give off a stronger smell.

– Wear clean clothes every day.

– Brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once every day to prevent holes in your teeth and bad breath.

– Shave off the hair under your armpits and on your pubic area to prevent unpleasant odour.

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 19 MAY 2024 KEY POINT

Be intentional about maintaining good hygiene.

QUIZ
What does Jesus say about judging others?

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 19 MAY 2024 HYMN 10 – O GOD, OUR HELP IN AGES PAST

1. O God, our help in ages past
Our hope for years to come
Our shelter from the stormy blast
And our eternal home.

2. Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure
Sufficient is Thine arm alone
And our defence is sure.

3. Before the hills in order stood
Or earth received her frame
From everlasting Thou art God
To endless years the same.

4. A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone
Short as he watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

5. Time, like an ever-rolling stream
Bears all its sons away
They fly forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

6. O God, our help in ages past
Our hope in years to come
Be thou our guard while trouble last
And our Eternal home.

2. HELPFUL TIPS FOR THE DEPRESSED

1. MISCONCEPTION VS REALITY
1. Misconception: Depression is not real.
Reality: Depression is a real illness that impacts the brain’s ability to function as it should.
2. Misconception: Depression is a sin. Being depressed means you are failing to trust God.
Reality: Depression is a mental illness, not a sin.
3. Misconception: Depression will go away if you pray hard enough or have enough faith.
Reality: Depression is a serious illness that usually needs prayer plus treatment. God gave doctors and mental health professionals the understanding and skills to help those who are suffering.
4. Misconception: Depression is a punishment from God. If you feel depressed, it is because you have not confessed your sins (John 9:1-3).
Reality: Depression is not the fault of the person who is suffering. It is a trial that can redefine someone’s faith, but it is not a punishment for sin.
5. Misconception: People with depression are unstable and cannot be trusted with church leadership or responsibilities.
Reality: Depression and other mental illnesses do not disqualify people from leadership or church roles except during times of “deep depression.’ The experience can give people compassion or perspective in a way that makes them good leaders (1 Samuel 30:1-10).
6. Misconception: It is shameful to discuss mental illness openly.
Reality: The church community should be a safe environment for people to discuss mental health without prejudice.
7. Misconception: You can always tell if someone is depressed by outward appearances or actions.
Reality: You cannot always tell that someone is depressed from how they look or act. Some depressed people are so skilled at hiding their conditions that you would never know.

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Why is it that some people with mental health issues shy away from discussing it?

2. HELPFUL TIPS FOR THE DEPRESSED
Below are some helpful tips if you are a Christian going through depression or if you know someone who is:
1. God cares about your state (Hebrews 4:15; 1 Peter 5:7).
2. Like biblical patriarchs, you are not alone (Jeremiah 20:7-11; 1 Kings 19:4-6; Psalm 42:9).
3. God’s love and faithfulness never depend on you. His love for us is solely dependent on His character, grace, and goodness (Lamentations 3:21-23).
4. God saves and delivers from afflictions (Psalm 34:18-19).
5. God can bring good even out of something as bad as depression (Romans 8:28).
6. There is still hope. Your low thoughts and emotions are not the truth (Job 14:7-9; Romans 8:35-39).
7. You can find strength by leaning on community (Romans 15:1).
8. Your friends and family can help you by praying and being there for you.

10. Do not allow anything to separate you from God (Romans 8:38-39; Hebrews 12:2).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Why do we have cases of people committing suicide as a result of depression despite the available helpful tips around?

[6]And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.
[7]And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David.
[8]And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: We are living in a world that is full of worries, depression, difficulties, issues, challenges, etc. either in the life of individuals, families, places of work, communities or nations. Everybody experiences different types of difficulty at one point in time. No matter the challenges you are facing, the best encouragement you can get comes from God. David encouraged himself in the Lord.

LESSON OUTLINE ONE
WHAT CAN BRING DISCOURAGEMENT?
When we talk about discouragement, it means courage that is taken away and replaced with an unknown. There are so many factors in a man’s life that can lead to discouragement. All discouragement is from Satan or self, it is never from God because God is called “the God of all comfort” – II Corinthians 1:3.

CAUSES OF DISCOURAGEMENT
• Fatigue: being worn out – Mark 4:38.
• Frustration.
• Fear.
• Failure.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO
CAST YOUR CARES ON HIM
Are you tired of wrestling over and over again over the same concerns? Has it aggravated to the point that it is beginning to weigh you down? Cast your cares on Jesus the Author and Finisher of your faith. There is no burden that we cannot cast on the Lord – I Peter 5:7.

These words are written to the suffering saints in the early Church who were experiencing intense suffering and extreme persecution not because they were living out of their faith. They were living in humility and righteousness. Peter wanted them to know that no matter what they were going through, all their worries and anxieties could be thrown on the Lord because He cares.

ACTIVITY: Look for someone whom you know is being discouraged and do all things to encourage them now.

SUMMARY: Discouragement is a weapon of the devil to attack your faith in God.

CONCLUSION: David encouraged himself in the Lord his God. He enquired at the Lord saying, shall I pursue after this troop? Shall I overtake them? And He answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them and without fail, recover all-1 Sam. 30:6-8.

OPEN HEAVENS FOR TEENS 18 MAY 2024 SATURDAY: PRACTICE GOOD HYGIENE I

MEMORISE: Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Matthew 23:25

READ: Deuteronomy 23:10-13
[10]If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of uncleanness that chanceth him by night, then shall he go abroad out of the camp, he shall not come within the camp:
[11]But it shall be, when evening cometh on, he shall wash himself with water: and when the sun is down, he shall come into the camp again.
[12]Thou shalt have a place also without the camp, whither thou shalt go forth abroad:
[13]And thou shalt have a paddle upon thy weapon; and it shall be, when thou wilt ease thyself abroad, thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt turn back and cover that which cometh from thee:

MESSAGE
Research has shown that many sicknesses and diseases are as a result of poor hygiene. From experience, I have discovered that when people create problems for themselves, they blame God for it, whereas, they neglected doing the right things.
In today’s Bible reading, God gave the children of Israel rules on how to maintain proper hygiene within the camp because He was as much interested in their physical environment as He was with their spiritual environment (heart). Similarly, God expects you to pay attention to your physical appearance and environment.
My dear child, don’t neglect laying your bed, tidying your room, and washing your dirty dishes, toilet, and underwear. Keeping a pile of dirty clothes without washing them for a long time will only breed germs and bad odours. Imagine if Jesus walks into your room now, will He give you a thumbs-up? Bear in mind that Jesus is everywhere; therefore, you must make your heart and space very clean.

ACTION POINT
Do a thorough cleaning of your room at least once every week. Clean out any cobwebs and whatever dirt you find underneath your bed. Also, ensure you do your laundry.

HYMN 10 – O GOD, OUR HELP IN AGES PAST
1. O God, our help in ages past
Our hope for years to come
Our shelter from the stormy blast
And our eternal home.

2. Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure
Sufficient is Thine arm alone
And our defence is sure.

3. Before the hills in order stood
Or earth received her frame
From everlasting Thou art God
To endless years the same.

4. A thousand ages in Thy sight
Are like an evening gone
Short as he watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

5. Time, like an ever-rolling stream
Bears all its sons away
They fly forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

6. O God, our help in ages past
Our hope in years to come
Be thou our guard while trouble last
And our Eternal home.

FRIDAY: NOTHING WITHOUT HIM

MEMORISE: Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God: 2 Corinthians 3:5

READ: Proverbs 3:5-6
[5]Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
[6]In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

MESSAGE
Many times, when you listen to the testimonies of some people, you will hear them glorifying themselves. They take the shine away from God and give all the credit to their efforts. In Philippians 3:3-7, Paul listed his status and achievements. However, he added in verse 7: *”But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.”* Today’s Bible reading says: *”Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and He shall direct thy paths.”*
Beloved, if you want to experience God’s goodness, then you must not lean on your own understanding. You must accept that you cannot do anything without Him. You must get to the point where you can say that it is in Him you live, move and have your being (Acts 17:28). You must always remember the words of Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 3:5: *”Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God.”*

PRAYER POINT
Without God, you are nothing.
